Last updated August 31, 2026
Overview
Cision is a public relations and earned-media technology company that supplies software, databases, distribution services, monitoring tools, and analytics to organizations managing their public communications. Its customers include businesses, government bodies, educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, public relations agencies, and other professional communicators. The company’s portfolio combines media-contact intelligence with press-release distribution, social and news monitoring, brand measurement, influencer and journalist research, and workflow tools for communications teams. The company has roots in Sweden and operated for many years as Cision AB, but its ownership and operating structure changed substantially through consolidation in the public-relations technology sector. In 2014, Cision and the United States-based Vocus agreed to merge. The combined company moved its headquarters to Chicago and continued under the Cision name, making the business more closely oriented toward the North American communications-software market while retaining international operations. Subsequent acquisitions expanded its capabilities and geographic reach, including Gorkana in the United Kingdom, PR Newswire from UBM, PRIME Research, Brandwatch, Streem, and Factmata. Cision’s principal offerings have included media databases, public-relations workflow software, online press-release distribution, social listening, news monitoring, audience and influencer intelligence, and measurement and reporting. Several acquired services retained their own market identities. PR Newswire is a major news-release distribution network, while PRWeb offers online press-release publication. Brandwatch contributes social listening, consumer intelligence, and digital conversation analysis. Streem focuses on real-time media monitoring, and Factmata added technology for analyzing media and content signals. The company has also operated or integrated services such as HARO, Gorkana, Vocus, and PRIME Research. Historically, Cision marketed web-based packages for marketing, public relations, and government-relations users. These products supported press-release distribution, journalist and blogger research, monitoring of news and social platforms, campaign analysis, government-contact management, lobbying-activity analysis, and political-action-committee compliance reporting. The software has been distributed in multiple languages and sold internationally through subscription and service arrangements. Cision became a public company in 2017 through a reverse merger with Capitol Acquisition Corporation III. Platinum Equity completed a roughly $2.7 billion acquisition of Cision in January 2020, returning the company to private ownership. Leadership subsequently changed several times: Abel Clark became chief executive in 2020, Brandon Crawley returned as interim CEO in 2022, Cali Tran became CEO in 2023, and Guy Abramo was appointed CEO in January 2025. In 2023, Cision introduced CisionOne, an integrated, AI-enabled communications platform intended to bring monitoring, intelligence, workflow, and analysis into a unified environment. Today, Cision is positioned as an enterprise communications and media-intelligence provider rather than solely as a press-release distributor. Its competitive proposition rests on combining proprietary media and audience data, broad distribution networks, monitoring coverage, analytics, and software automation. The business remains active and privately owned, with its current corporate center in Chicago and operations serving communications professionals across international markets.
History
Cision’s history reflects the development of the global public-relations software and earned-media market. The company originated in Sweden and operated as Cision AB, building a business around media databases, monitoring, communications measurement, and public-relations services. Its tools were used by corporate, public-sector, educational, and nonprofit communications teams, and the software was distributed in several languages. An early restructuring occurred in 2011, when Cision AB sold its Finnish subsidiary, Oy Cision Finland AB, to M-Brain Group. The company then pursued expansion through acquisitions and partnerships. In September 2014, it announced the purchase of Visible Technologies, adding social-media analytics and online reputation capabilities. The following month, Cision and Vocus announced a friendly merger. The transaction brought together Cision’s international media-intelligence activities and Vocus’s public-relations software and services. The combined organization relocated its headquarters to Chicago, while continuing to use the Cision name. The enlarged company continued to assemble a broad communications-services portfolio. In 2015 it acquired Gorkana, a United Kingdom provider of journalist databases, media monitoring, and analysis. Later that year, Cision agreed to purchase PR Newswire from UBM for approximately $841 million. PR Newswire significantly broadened Cision’s release-distribution network and strengthened the company’s position in corporate communications. Cision also continued operating or integrating other acquired brands and services, including PRWeb, HARO, North Social, Eureka, Vocus, and Media Insight Suite. Cision expanded its measurement capabilities through the acquisition of PRIME Research. The agreement was announced in December 2017 and completed in January 2018. PRIME Research added international communications research and evaluation expertise. In June 2017, before that acquisition closed, Cision had entered the public markets through a reverse merger with Capitol Acquisition Corporation III. The public-company period ended when Platinum Equity completed a $2.7 billion acquisition in January 2020, returning Cision to private ownership. Management changed during the following years. Abel Clark became chief executive in September 2020, replacing interim chief Brandon Crawley. Crawley returned as interim CEO in February 2022. During 2022, Cision expanded its real-time monitoring and content-analysis capabilities by acquiring Streem, an Australian media-monitoring company, and Factmata, a media-monitoring and analytics technology business. In January 2023, Cali Tran became chief executive. In June of that year, Cision launched CisionOne, an AI-powered platform intended to unify media monitoring, communications intelligence, workflow, and analysis. The launch represented a shift toward a more integrated enterprise SaaS proposition rather than a collection of separate public-relations tools and acquired services. In 2024, Dow Jones & Company sued Cision in a contract dispute; the available reference material does not provide a final resolution. On January 15, 2025, Guy Abramo was named CEO, replacing Tran. Cision now operates as a privately owned communications-technology company headquartered in Chicago. Its portfolio spans media-contact intelligence, press-release distribution, real-time news monitoring, social listening, brand and consumer analysis, public-relations workflow, and communications measurement. The business retains an international operating footprint while serving a market increasingly shaped by automation, artificial intelligence, fragmented media channels, and demand for measurable earned-media results.
