Overview
Cisco certifications are a structured family of professional credentials offered by Cisco Systems for people who design, install, operate, secure, troubleshoot, and sell network and information-technology systems. The program is closely associated with Cisco products and technologies, but its subject areas extend beyond traditional routing and switching into cybersecurity, wireless networking, collaboration, data centers, service-provider infrastructure, automation, software development, and network design. The program is organized primarily by level. Entry credentials introduce foundational technical knowledge; associate certifications validate role-oriented skills; professional certifications address more advanced implementation and operational responsibilities; and expert credentials test advanced design knowledge and practical ability. Cisco has also offered specialist credentials for particular technologies, job roles, sales activities, business functions, data-center work, and instructor responsibilities. The Cisco Certified Academy Instructor designation supports instructors participating in Cisco Networking Academy, while other specialist credentials have addressed focused technical or commercial capabilities. Historically, the best-known pathway began with associate-level credentials such as CCNA and continued through professional credentials such as CCNP to expert certifications such as CCIE. Older versions of the program contained numerous technology-specific associate and professional tracks, including security, voice and collaboration, wireless, industrial networking, service providers, data centers, and cloud. Several of these tracks were retired or consolidated as Cisco revised its certification structure. A major restructuring took effect in February 2020. Cisco consolidated the earlier collection of CCNA specializations into a unified CCNA examination and reorganized professional and expert pathways around contemporary job roles. The revised structure included CCNA, Cisco Certified DevNet Associate, Cisco Certified CyberOps Associate, multiple CCNP tracks, and expert credentials including CCIE, CCDE, and related specialist paths. A further revision effective October 1, 2023 added the Cisco Certified Support Technician family as an entry-level option and updated the associate, professional, and expert-level catalog. The modern portfolio therefore combines infrastructure credentials with certifications for software development, cybersecurity operations, and automation. Most certifications are earned by passing one or more examinations delivered through Cisco’s examination-provider arrangements, historically including Pearson VUE. CCIE credentials additionally require a practical, hands-on lab examination administered at designated locations. Certification validity and renewal requirements vary by credential and program version, although many older certifications were valid for three years. Cisco’s Learning Network provides certification information, preparation resources, communities, and related learning materials. The credentials are used by individual technology professionals, employers, training providers, public-sector organizations, and educational institutions as signals of role-specific knowledge. They are not academic degrees or government licenses. Their value depends on the particular certification, the age of the examination blueprint, practical experience, and the employer’s technology environment. History
Cisco certifications developed as Cisco Systems expanded its networking technologies and sought standardized ways to assess the skills of administrators, engineers, designers, security specialists, instructors, and other professionals. The program became particularly prominent through the Cisco Certified Network Associate, Cisco Certified Network Professional, and Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert designations. These credentials established a progression from foundational networking knowledge to advanced implementation and expert practical competence. Early versions of the portfolio treated CCNA as the principal entry point. Cisco subsequently introduced lower-level credentials such as Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician, or CCENT, for basic network-support skills. CCENT addressed small-network installation, administration, troubleshooting, and introductory security concepts, and could serve as a starting point for some associate pathways. Cisco also created the Cisco Certified Design Associate credential for professionals designing switched, routed, and broadband networks. As Cisco’s product portfolio broadened, the certification catalog gained separate paths for routing and switching, network design, security, wireless, voice and collaboration, service providers, industrial networks, storage networking, data centers, and cloud. Professional credentials such as CCNP and CCDP assessed more advanced planning, implementation, troubleshooting, and architecture skills. Some programs used multiple examinations, prerequisites, or technology-specific sequences. The CCIE family developed into the program’s best-known expert tier, combining a written examination with a demanding hands-on laboratory test. CCDE provided an expert-level design alternative focused on network architecture. The catalog changed repeatedly as technologies and job roles evolved. Older credentials were retired, renamed, or replaced, and validity periods and examination requirements changed between versions. A significant change took effect on February 24, 2020. Cisco retired many specialized CCNA and CCNP tracks, consolidated the associate-level networking curriculum into the 200-301 CCNA examination, and introduced or refreshed credentials for DevNet and CyberOps. The professional portfolio was reorganized around tracks such as Enterprise, Collaboration, Data Center, Security, Service Provider, DevNet, and CyberOps. Wireless and other former pathways were incorporated into broader role-based structures or discontinued as standalone certifications. Cisco announced another substantial revision effective October 1, 2023. The updated catalog added two entry-level CCST credentials and presented a revised set of associate, professional, and expert certifications. The resulting framework retained widely recognized credentials such as CCNA, CCNP, and CCIE while reflecting the growing importance of software development, automation, cybersecurity operations, and contemporary enterprise infrastructure. Assessment has generally combined theoretical examinations with practical evaluation where appropriate. Examinations have historically been delivered through Pearson VUE test centers, while CCIE practical exams are conducted in designated laboratory environments. Cisco Learning Network and Cisco training partners provide preparation materials, courses, communities, and practice resources. Cisco Networking Academy also connects the certification ecosystem with educational institutions and instructors. The program’s historical importance comes from its role in defining a widely recognized vendor-specific skills ladder for network professionals. At the same time, credentials are tied to Cisco’s technologies and examination blueprints, so they complement rather than replace hands-on experience and broader knowledge of standards, operating systems, cloud platforms, security practices, and other vendors.

CCENTRetired entry-level certification
Cisco Certified Entry Networking Technician covered basic networking, small-network support, device administration, troubleshooting, and introductory security. It was used as an entry-level credential and, in some historical pathways, as preparation or a prerequisite for associate certifications. The credential is retired.
CCNA SecurityRetired associate certification
CCNA Security validated knowledge of network threats, vulnerabilities, security infrastructure, and mitigation practices. It covered the installation, monitoring, and troubleshooting of security technologies and was retired during Cisco’s 2020 restructuring.
CCNA WirelessRetired associate certification
CCNA Wireless covered the configuration, implementation, and support of wireless LAN environments. It served wireless administrators, support specialists, and project personnel before being retired as a standalone pathway.
CCDPRetired professional design certification
Cisco Certified Design Professional addressed advanced enterprise architecture, addressing, routing, security, management, multicast, wireless, and virtual-private-network design. It was retired in the 2020 restructuring.
