Overview

Cinematk (also known as CTK) was a Spanish private pay-television channel produced by Chello Multicanal. It focused on independent, auteur, alternative, modern, current and avant-garde cinema. Each night the channel devoted a special themed slot to formats such as double features, great directors, cycles, Eastern cinema, European cinema and independent film. The channel was launched on 15 September 1997 alongside the launch of Vía Digital, the Spanish satellite pay-TV platform on which it was to be available. In 1998 the telecommunications company Ono was created and offered a cable television package that already included some channels from the Catalan producer, including Cinematk. In 2000 Telecable launched a package called "Opción Premium" that included four Mediapark channels: Showtime Extreme, Cinematk, Canal Palomitas and Canal 18. Three days before the launch of the pay-TV platform Quiero TV, it was announced that Mediapark would offer Quiero TV subscribers two Mediapark channels already available on Vía Digital: Canal Palomitas and Cinematk (the latter broadcasting only during the early morning hours). In April 2002, several cable providers in different parts of Spain merged to form AunaCable, which presented a television offer that already included the channel. The channel disappeared from Quiero TV on 30 June 2002 due to the closure of that digital platform. In June 2003, Mediapark and Euskaltel reached an agreement to add five themed channels produced by Mediapark to the Basque telecommunications company: Natura, Canal Star, Cinematk, Showtime Extreme and Canal 18. That same month, the contract for Cinematk and other Mediapark channels was renewed for two more years on Ono's television offer. On 21 July 2003, Cinematk left Vía Digital due to the platform's merger with Canal Satélite Digital. Although it had disappeared from two digital platforms, the channel was still available on cable operators such as AunaCable, Ono, Telecable and Euskaltel. In January 2005, the channel renewed its corporate image along with its graphics, which also underwent a radical change. On 1 October 2014, the channel was shut down by AMC Networks International Iberia because it competed with its own channel Sundance Channel (Spain).
