Overview
CInema Kastrychnik — better known in Russian as kinoteatr «Oktyabr» (October) — is a wide-format cinema on Independence Avenue in Minsk, Belarus. It opened on 30 January 1975 on the site of the earlier wooden Zorka cinema, with a premiere of the film «Blokada». The building was designed by architect V. N. Malyshev under an individual design by the Belgosproekt institute, and its total area is about 8,000 square metres. Its single amphitheatre-shaped auditorium is the largest cinema hall in the country, seating more than a thousand people, and it holds a 22-by-10-metre seamless screen. The hall was conceived as a cinema-and-concert venue, which is why its acoustics are widely noted; it is equipped with air conditioning and a DTS Surround System. The cinema is part of the state-run network «КиноМинска» (Kinominska), operated by the Unitary Enterprise «Kinovideoprokat» of the Minsk City Executive Committee. That enterprise is responsible for organising film services for the population of Minsk and for promoting cinema art, and it also provides advertising services and organises film events. Beyond screenings, the Oktyabr building contains a vestibule, two foyers, a cafe, a pizzeria that becomes a club in the evening, a winter garden with exotic plants and live parrots, and the modern Cinema Bar coffee shop. Its second-floor foyer regularly hosts exhibitions, and the venue traditionally hosts world premieres, film festivals and presentations of new films. Over its history the cinema has been renovated and modernised. A major refurbishment saw it reopen on 8 March 2012 with more comfortable seats, reducing capacity from 1,388 to 1,180 places, and with digital row lighting added. In 2005, for the city's day, a bronze sculpture «Postman» was installed outside the cinema. The venue remains a fixture of Minsk cultural life and a landmark on Independence Avenue, close to the Academy of Sciences metro station.
History
The cinema now known as CInema Kastrychnik — kinoteatr «Oktyabr» — was built on the site of the former wooden Zorka cinema (zorka meaning «star» in Belarusian). Designed by architect V. N. Malyshev under an individual project by the Belgosproekt institute, the building was completed in 1975 and opened on 30 January 1975 with a premiere of the film «Blokada». Its total area is about 8,000 square metres. The single auditorium was conceived as a cinema-and-concert hall, which shaped its acoustics, and it was equipped with the first experimental apparatus in the cinema that read the sound track. In 1976 the cinema recorded 2,274,034 admissions. The venue became a landmark on Independence Avenue, with a vestibule, two foyers, a cafe, a pizzeria that operates as a club in the evening, and a winter garden with exotic plants and a large cage of live parrots. Its screen measures 22 by 10 metres, and the hall — the largest in the republic — seats more than a thousand people. On 9 September 2005, for the city's day, a bronze sculpture «Postman» was installed outside the cinema; the composition was assembled from 100 parts with a total weight of 700 kilograms. A major renovation saw the cinema reopen on 8 March 2012. During the works the seats were replaced with more comfortable ones, the total number of places was reduced from 1,388 to 1,180, and digital row lighting was introduced. In 2011 the cinema recorded 710,000 admissions, and in 2014 its profitability was 3.7%. The cinema is part of the structure of the Unitary Enterprise «Kinovideoprokat» of the Minsk City Executive Committee, which organises film services for the population of Minsk, promotes cinema art, provides advertising services and organises film events. The network is presented under the «КиноМинска» brand, and the Oktyabr venue continues to host world premieres, film festivals and presentations of new films, with exhibitions regularly mounted in its second-floor foyer.
