Overview
CINEMA-Filmtheater is a programmkino (arthouse cinema) at Nymphenburger Straße 31 in the Maxvorstadt district of Munich, Germany. It specializes in presenting films in their original version (OV) and live broadcasts, using modern cinema technology. The cinema opened on 23 October 1954 and was among the most modern German cinemas of its time; its curved 1950s-style canopy survives to this day. At opening it seated 580 people, and a balcony still gives the auditorium its particular charm. After renovation the cinema had a capacity of 411 seats until August 2022; in September 2022 the parquet seating was renewed, reducing capacity to 280 seats. Under the direction of Dieter Buchwald, CINEMA achieved a leading status in German cinema technology from the late 1970s. Buchwald was also, from 1992, initiator and co-operator of Germany's first IMAX theatre in the Forum der Technik at the Deutsches Museum in Munich, and operator of the Discovery Channel IMAX theatre at Potsdamer Platz in Berlin. In 1987 CINEMA became Germany's first certified THX cinema, and in 2005 it showed the country's first digitally projected 3D film. Since 25 April 2016 the cinema has been equipped with Dolby Atmos sound. As early as the late 1970s, CINEMA was the first arthouse cinema in Germany where one could buy popcorn. The cinema has repeatedly been awarded the Kinoprogrammpreis of the City of Munich. The Filmfest München and the Fantasy Filmfest have also been guests at CINEMA. In May 2023 CINEMA was honored by the International Cinema Technology Association (ICTA) with the ICTA Presentation Excellence Award, which recognizes innovative and technically minded cinema operators who continuously strive to celebrate the cinema as a place of encounter and experience through outstanding use of cinema technology; creativity, digital excellence and above-average visitor focus are further selection criteria. Currently, films in original version (OV), sneak previews and live broadcasts (including from the Metropolitan Opera in New York and the National Theatre in London) continue to draw audiences. Technically, the cinema's sound is optimized as a unique selling point through time-consuming regular calibration procedures and a special wood paneling throughout the auditorium. Over the years CINEMA has offered almost all developments in cinema sound systems: Dolby Atmos (currently since 24 April 2016), Dolby 7.1, Dolby EX, Dolby SRD, SDDS, DTS, Dolby SR, Dolby A and Dolby 6-Track. Since September 2021 films have been presented with Germany's first HFR-capable 4K high-contrast flagship laser projector from Barco. The Silverscreen screen measures 10.50 × 4.70 meters. Since 2005 films have been projected digitally at CINEMA, until 2021 with a 4K-HFR projector from Christie Digital Systems, Inc. Until 1994 audiences could even see films in Ultra Panavision 70mm at CINEMA.
