Overview

Cinéma du Parc is an art-house cinema located in the Plateau Mont-Royal in Montreal, recognized for programming that highlights independent American and international cinema. It is part of the Cinéma Cinéma network alongside Cinéma Beaubien and Cinéma du Musée; the three cinemas share a common direction and a non-profit mission devoted to art-house film distribution and big-screen experiences. Opened in 1977, the cinema has passed through several names and identities, and after a renovation it is described as among the most beautiful cinemas in Quebec.

History

Cinéma du Parc opened in 1977, built under the name Cinémas La Cité, and carries several names and identities that succeeded one another over time. It was the first cinema complex with more than two screens in Montreal when it opened under the aegis of Famous Players, and its existence is closely tied to the urban development of the Milton-Parc neighbourhood and the construction of residential towers bordering McGill University's campus. In 1995, the cinema was put up for sale when Viacom bought the Famous Players chain in 1994; owner and programmer Thierry Martin, who headed the respected Cinéma de Paris and Cinéma V, acquired it with his brother Éric. They restored a mixed type of programming, braving the risks of managing an art-house and repertory cinema until going bankrupt in spring 1999. In 1999, Don Lobel, a former film professor and programmer of independent films and rock shows at the Rialto theatre (1988–1993), negotiated an affordable rent with the owners of Galeries du Parc to take the reins of Cinéma du Parc. From the first month of reopening, more than 16,000 film lovers attended, exceeding box-office expectations. The cinema is now part of the Cinéma Cinéma network with Cinéma Beaubien and Cinéma du Musée, which share a common direction and a non-profit identity devoted to art-house film distribution.
