Overview

Cinéma Beaubien is a cinema in Montreal's Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie borough. Opened on 3 December 1937 under the name Le Beaubien with 400 seats, it is described as the oldest cinema still in operation in Montreal. It was sold in 1941 to Canadian Odeon Theatres and administered under the name Le Dauphin; in 2000, then owned by Cineplex Loews Odeon and facing bankruptcy, it closed, prompting citizens, merchants and politicians to mobilize to save it. In autumn 2001 a new management led by Mario Fortin took over the new Cinéma Beaubien, and subsequent renovations equipped it with 5 screens and digital projectors. In October 2022 general management was entrusted to Roxanne Sayegh. The cinema is part of the non-profit Cinéma Cinéma network alongside Cinéma du Parc and Cinéma du Musée, sharing a common identity while preserving each venue's distinct character.

History

Cinéma Beaubien opened on 3 December 1937 under the name Le Beaubien with 400 seats, at a time when Montreal had about a hundred neighbourhood cinemas. The building was quickly listed in the historical heritage of the Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie borough. In 1941 Le Beaubien was sold to Canadian Odeon Theatres, which administered it under the name Le Dauphin. In 2000, while owned by Cineplex Loews Odeon, which was facing bankruptcy, Le Dauphin had to close; citizens, merchants and politicians mobilized to save the institution and asked the Corporation de développement économique communautaire (CDEC) to support them, and thanks to their efforts the venue avoided definitive closure. In autumn 2001 a new management led by Mario Fortin took the reins of the new Cinéma Beaubien; in the following years numerous renovations equipped the cinema with 5 screens and digital projectors. Since then it has enjoyed success and earned a prominent place in Quebec's film milieu, becoming the favourite cinema of art-house fans. In October 2022 general management was entrusted to Roxanne Sayegh. The Cinéma Beaubien, Cinéma du Parc and Cinéma du Musée already shared the same management and now share a common identity, Cinéma Cinéma, forming a non-profit network devoted to art-house film distribution and to creating enriching big-screen experiences.
