Overview

CIMAC — Comunicación e Información de la Mujer A.C. — is a Mexican civil association founded in 1988 by a group of communication professionals to generate and publish information with a gender perspective on the situation of women and to make women's human rights visible in everyday journalistic work. It is widely recognized as a pioneer of feminist, independent and investigative journalism in Mexico. Its news agency arm, Cimacnoticias, specializes in human rights and gender perspective and is headquartered in Mexico City. The organization's mission, as stated on its official site, is to generate content, information and evidence on the human-rights situation of women; to promote the training, organization and participation of women journalists so they can practice their profession free of violence and discrimination; and to contribute to the comprehensive protection of women journalists against risks that threaten their safety, freedom and integrity. CIMAC works on the media-and-gender agenda to incorporate a gender perspective into media, expose violations of women's human rights, and build narratives supporting the right to a life free of violence for all. CIMAC's work areas include training, networks and freedom of expression, strategies (consulting for civil-society organizations, journalists and communication specialists to strategically incorporate a gender perspective in media), and the multimedia agency Cimacnoticias, which produces text, audio, video and photography. Cimacnoticias distributes information through subscription lists reaching more than 5,000 people with daily and weekly news services; its content is picked up by 260 media outlets in 28 Mexican states and by 87 international media outlets in 22 countries. CIMAC also monitors the situation of children in Mexico and promotes the Mexican News Agency for Children's Rights, which has published reports monitoring five national newspapers (El Sol de México, El Universal, La Jornada, Milenio, Reforma) on childhood and adolescence issues including education, violence, sexual abuse and exploitation, maternal health and gender inequality. CIMAC organizes and participates in forums, courses and workshops to raise gender-perspective awareness among journalists and institutions, and monitors the situation of women journalists in Mexico. It also promotes the National University Journalism Contest with a Gender Equality Perspective. In 2015 it won the Género y Justicia contest in the documentary category for "Ni una más." Its first director was Mexican journalist Sara Lovera; from 2005 to January 2026 the agency was directed by Lucía Lagunes Huerta, and from January 2026 the direction is assumed by Cirenia Celestino Ortega.
