Overview
Rifugio Ciampedie is a mountain hut (rifugio) of the Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT), a section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI), situated at 1,998 metres above sea level in the Rosengarten group, part of the South Tyrolean Dolomites in the Italian province of Trentino. The hut lies above Vigo di Fassa in the south-eastern part of the Rosengarten massif and is reachable both by cable car from Vigo di Fassa and by vehicle roads and marked hiking trails, including from the northern Valle di Vajolet. In its immediate surroundings are other accommodations such as Bellavista (2,000 m) and Rifugio Negritella (1,986 m), and it serves as a starting point for numerous circular hikes and via ferrata routes, including the Rotwand and Kesselkogel. In winter the area is developed by the Vigo di Fassa ski resort. The hut was built in 1904 by Silvio Rizzi from Pera in the Fassa Valley as a private mountain inn. It originally had six rooms with twelve beds and a dormitory with four places. In spring 1913 the owner offered the hut for sale to the Leipzig section of the German and Austrian Alpine Club due to illness in his family; because of its beautiful and favourable location, reachable from the Vajolet Hut in one and a half hours, the decision to purchase was made quickly, at a price of 24,600 crowns. After the First World War the Ciampedie Hut was expropriated by the Italian state and in 1923 handed over to the Trentino Società degli Alpinisti Tridentini (SAT), a section of the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI). Today the rifugio operates as a hospitality and accommodation business within the SAT/CAI network, serving hikers, climbers and winter visitors in the Rosengarten area. Its official website address is listed as rifugiociampedie.it, though the homepage currently returns a default server page with no active site content. The hut remains an active mountain refuge and a node in the network of Dolomite trails connecting to other huts such as the Rotwandhütte, Vajolet-Hütte and Grasleitenpasshütte.
