Overview
The Commercial & Industrial Club (Ci-Club) is a non-profit Israeli business club founded in 1938, before the establishment of the State of Israel, by leading merchants, industrialists and professionals. It serves as a meeting point for senior executives, managers, businesspeople and professionals from various disciplines across the Israeli economy, functioning as a network for doing business in and outside Israel. The club is managed voluntarily by a board selected from its members, headed by a president and CEO. Its core activities are social and business: social gatherings foster the creation of social projects to advance the next generation of entrepreneurs, as well as business connections among members for projects in Israel. Guests of honor at club events include senior public figures from government and politics, heads of global companies, leading economists, businesspeople, scientists and visionaries, discussing topics relevant to the national agenda. The club offers members opportunities to express opinions and influence public opinion leaders and policy makers, collaborations with organizations and companies with a compatible socio-economic agenda, an internal system of networking and business connections, and participation in outdoor events including visits and tours of sites some of which are not open to the public. The club is a non-profit public organization, registered in 1981 as a public benefit company. It operates from the Hilton Tel Aviv hotel since 2010. The club runs a scholarship fund named after Col. Ilan Ramon, granting scholarships to outstanding and needy students and high school pupils in Tel Aviv, mainly in the southern neighborhoods and Jaffa, as well as to students of the Amal network. Over the years, presidents, prime ministers, ministers, Knesset members, chiefs of staff, ambassadors, judges, writers, intellectuals and businesspeople have been hosted at the club; Shimon Peres holds the record with 39 appearances. In 2007 the club celebrated its 70th anniversary at a special event at the President's Residence.
History
The Commercial & Industrial Club was founded on February 10, 1938, by leading industrialists, professionals and Jewish merchants, as a club with a British character. The founding scroll was signed by industrialist Yaakov Botkovsky, timber merchant Moshe Svirsky and Meir Arison. Among the founders was also insurance man Herzl (Hertz) Goldenberg, one of the founders of the 'Yardenia' insurance company, who was active in the club for many years. Initially, the club served as a regular meeting place on Fridays, in the style of a British gentlemen's club. Its participants were men only until the 1980s, and opinions and ideas were exchanged and connections were formed in political, economic and legal fields. On May 20 of that year, a founding assembly convened and the organization's goals were expanded to creating fair trade relations and activity for the development of trade and industry in the chambers of commerce and the government. In the report of that year, President Botkovsky presented the club's success in the 'Kofer HaYishuv' campaign. As part of the club's activities, lectures on various topics were given, and tours were conducted with the help of the Jewish National Fund to familiarize members with settlements throughout the Land of Israel. In 1941 the club purchased its permanent building at 17 Nachmani Street in Tel Aviv, and at the end of the 1960s, after the building was sold, it moved its activities to the Zionist America House, the Doctors' House, the Journalists' House, the Sheraton Tel Aviv Hotel and the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Since 2010 the club has operated at the Hilton Tel Aviv Hotel. Alongside the club president, elected every two years and can serve only two consecutive terms, operates a 12-member board that forms committees on: scholarships, foreign relations, community activity, admissions committee and various events. Over the years, presidents, prime ministers, ministers, Knesset members, chiefs of staff, ambassadors, judges, writers, intellectuals and businesspeople have been hosted at the club. The record for appearances at the club, 39 in number, was set by Shimon Peres. In 2007 the club celebrated its 70th anniversary at a special event at the President's Residence. The club's presidents have included: Yaakov Botkovsky, Hillel Hillman, Dr. Arnon Rozansky, Israel Levin, Ephraim Guzman, Aryeh Weinberg, Dr. Chaim Teichman, Dr. Asher Halperin, Moshe Neudorfer, Moshe Shamir, Yitzhak Gatnio, Rami Guzman, Mira Friedman Hamo, Chaim Aharon, Amir Makov, Rafi Prial, Orly Avrahami, Dan Barnitzky, Amnon Dotan, Yona Bartal and Dr. David Gavrielov. The club established a scholarship fund named after Col. Ilan Ramon and grants scholarships to outstanding and needy students and high school pupils in Tel Aviv, mainly in the southern neighborhoods of Tel Aviv and Jaffa. The amounts for the fund are donated by club members and in cooperation with business entities. In addition, the club annually grants scholarships to students of the 'Amal' network.
