Church Road Winery

Church Road is a winery based in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. Its site's winemaking journey began in 1897, when a winery was established by Bartholomew Steinmetz, a Luxembourg émigré who came to New Zealand to make wine for the Marist Brothers Catholic Mission. The first wine under the Church Road label was produced on the same site in 1989–1991, informed by traditional French techniques imparted by winemakers from Bordeaux. Church Road describes itself as one of New Zealand's most highly-acclaimed wineries, with a commitment to winemaking excellence lasting over 125 years, and in 2025 it was the regional winner at the Great Wine Capital 'Best of Tourism' Awards for its Sustainable Wine Tourism Practices.

The winemaking journey on the site where Church Road now stands began in 1897, when a winery was established by Bartholomew Steinmetz, a Luxembourg émigré who came to New Zealand to make wine for the Marist Brothers Catholic Mission (known today as the Mission Estate Winery). Between 1921 and 1987, Tom McDonald OBE graduated from washing recycled bottles at age 14 to leasing and running the business; a decade later he purchased the winery outright, and he is remembered today as one of the founding fathers of New Zealand winemaking. Church Road's finest TOM wines are named in his honour. In 1989–1991, on the same site that Steinmetz established and McDonald made his own, the first wine was produced under the Church Road label, informed by traditional French techniques imparted by winemakers from Bordeaux, and Church Road was re-established as the heart of premium winemaking in New Zealand. From 2005 to the present, under Chief Winemaker Chris Scott, a five-time Winestate New Zealand Winemaker of the Year, Church Road continues to craft a portfolio of wines.
