Overview
Christburg Campus Berlin is a non-profit Christian education provider (Trägerverein) based in Berlin, Germany, under whose umbrella operate Christian kindergartens (Kitas) and state-recognised alternative schools (Ersatzschulen). The organisation traces its origins to 1987, when the "Freie Evangelische Schule Berlin" (FESB) was founded and entered in the association register under the chairmanship of Wolfgang Boguslawski. Its first school, today's Elisabeth-Abegg-Grundschule, opened in 1988 in the former Wedding Lazarus hospital with 20 pupils, making it at the time Berlin's smallest school. Over the following decades the organisation expanded through relocations, new school foundations and the addition of daycare centres, and in 2014 both the association and its operating company were renamed: the association became Christburg Campus Berlin e. V. and the school and Kita operator became Christburg Campus gemeinnützige GmbH. Today the Christburg Campus comprises three kindergartens, three primary schools and the Corrie-ten-Boom-Schule, an integrated secondary school (Integrierte Sekundarschule) with a gymnasial upper level. Its locations are in the Berlin districts of Prenzlauer Berg, Spandau and Hellersdorf. The schools are members of the Verband Evangelischer Bekenntnisschulen (VEBS), the Christburg Campus belongs to the "Selbständige Werke der Kategorie II" of the Deutsche Evangelische Allianz and to the network "Gemeinsam für Berlin". As a recognised Ersatzschulträger it is subject to state school supervision; in Berlin its free schools are reimbursed only about two-thirds of their costs, with the remainder raised from parents and donors. The organisation describes its mission as enriching Berlin's educational offering with kindergartens and schools in which Jesus stands at the centre, professionally and competently working on a biblical foundation so that children and young people grow into strong personalities and discover their callings. It aims to create places of security where Christian values are taught and lived, and to accompany young people lovingly, respectfully and with individual support. Its vision is to create and shape safe learning and experience spaces in Berlin where Jesus can be experienced, guided by the Holy Spirit, and to enable the children and young people entrusted to it to live consciously and meaningfully. By early 2019 around 900 pupils attended the Christburg Campus schools (roughly 700 at the primary schools and 200 at the integrated secondary school), taught by teachers across the three locations. The organisation has been led over the years by various chairs and managing directors, including Friedrich Eckert, Clemens Volber, Heinz Kiock, Erhart Zeiser, Wolfgang Stock and Dirk Noack. In 2014 the schools received the "Fair-Family-Gütesiegel" for their commitment to the families of pupils and staff.
History
The Christburg Campus Berlin traces its origins to 1987, when the "Freie Evangelische Schule Berlin" (FESB) was founded and entered in the association register under the chairmanship of Wolfgang Boguslawski. In 1988 the first primary school, today's Elisabeth-Abegg-Grundschule, opened for classes 1 to 6 in the rooms of the former Wedding Lazarus hospital with 20 pupils, making it at the time Berlin's smallest school. In 1989 it moved to the neighbouring Paul-Gerhardt-Stift, and in 1991 it had to move from Wedding to Karlshorst into the building of today's Catholic University of Applied Sciences for Social Work. On 1 August 1993 the school was state-recognised as an Ersatzschule. In the same year it joined the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Evangelischer Bekenntnisschulen (AEBS), today the Verband Evangelischer Bekenntnisschulen (VEBS). In 1994 the school moved to Niederschönhausen to today's Boris-Pasternak-Weg. The former pastor Friedrich Eckert took over the chairmanship and Clemens Volber became the first full-time managing director. In 1996 the school was expanded with a school Hort (after-school care). In 1998 the Corrie-ten-Boom-Schule was founded as a Realschule with 18 pupils (state-recognised Ersatzschule since 1 June 2002), today with more than 100 pupils. In 1999 the primary and secondary schools moved to their current location in the listed Wilhelmine school ensemble at Christburger Straße 14 to 14B in Prenzlauer Berg. The building ensemble has been the property of the supporting association since 2005. After Friedrich Eckert's death, Clemens Volber became the new chairman and co-founded the VEBS. In 2006, with the help of Bernd Siggelkow and Kai-Uwe Lindloff, the "Arche-Grundschule" at Naumburger Ring 25 in Hellersdorf (in cooperation with Die Arche – Christliches Kinder- und Jugendwerk) and the Immanuel-Schule in Spandau's Falkenhagener Feld began operating under the FESB umbrella. In 2008 the Immanuel primary school moved into its current school building there and also began Hort operations. The first primary school was renamed Christburg-Grundschule in 2008, and the Realschule was renamed Corrie-ten-Boom-Schule. In 2009 the FESB celebrated its 20th anniversary with 550 pupils and 140 staff at the time. The school was admitted to the Verband Deutscher Privatschulverbände. In 2010, due to the Berlin school reform, the Realschule was converted into and realigned as an Integrierte Sekundarschule. In 2011 the businessman Heinz Kiock took over the chairmanship. The Arche-Grundschule moved to its current home at Lichtenhainer Straße 2. From 2012 Wolfgang Stock served as managing director (until 2017). The school had 120 staff. The following year Pastor Erhart Zeiser took over the chairmanship. Due to legal constraints, the FESB founded the Freie Evangelische Schulen Berlin (FESB) gemeinnützige GmbH as a wholly owned subsidiary and new school operator. In August 2013 there were 720 pupils in four schools, of whom 400 were supported and cared for in the Hort. In addition, two Kitas with more than 70 children were created in 2013, one of them in the school building in Hellersdorf with 55 places and 9 staff. In 2013 a total of 165 staff were employed. In 2014 the operating company and the association were renamed. The association is now called Christburg Campus Berlin e. V., and the school and Kita operator is Christburg Campus gemeinnützige GmbH. In 2016 the association and the Christburg Campus gGmbH were restructured. The association now has three benches with members each from the parent body, the staff and spiritual leaders from Berlin. Each of these benches appoints a chairperson who also sits on the supervisory board of the gGmbH. The supervisory board is supplemented by a senior staff member, Ines Bachnik, and two external experts, Rahel Dreyer and Bernhard Schreiber. In 2018 Wolfgang Stock moved to the VEBS as general secretary; he was succeeded by the new managing director Dirk Noack, and the Christburg Campus celebrated its 30th anniversary. At the beginning of 2019 around 700 pupils attended the primary schools and 200 the integrated secondary school, meaning the Christburg Campus had around 900 pupils. The teachers teach around 900 pupils at the three locations. As a recognised Ersatzschulträger the Christburg Campus is subject to state school supervision; in Berlin its free schools are reimbursed only about two-thirds of their costs, with the remainder raised by parents and donors. In 2014 the school was awarded the "Fair-Family-Gütesiegel" for its commitment to the families of pupils and staff. The schools are members of the Verband Evangelischer Bekenntnisschulen. The Christburg Campus belongs to the "Selbständige Werke der Kategorie II" of the Deutsche Evangelische Allianz and to "Gemeinsam für Berlin".
