History
Chinese Merchandise Bank was established in June 1993 in the context of China's reform and opening-up. It was formed under the lead sponsorship of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China and was the first Sino-foreign joint venture bank in Guangdong Province. The bank was headquartered in Shenzhen, the southern Chinese city that was itself a centrepiece of the reform era. For its first decade and more, the bank operated as a Sino-foreign joint venture institution. A decisive turning point came in August 2005, when it became a wholly owned member enterprise of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China Group and a subsidiary of Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (Asia) Limited. With that change, its corporate nature shifted from a Sino-foreign joint venture bank to a wholly foreign-owned bank. In the years that followed, the bank was positioned within the ICBC group as ICBC (Asia)'s flagship for expanding business in mainland China and as a bridgehead serving the mainland market. It holds a full commercial banking licence and draws on ICBC's support in customer resources, product development, business expansion, fund clearing and systems. Its business spans personal, corporate and interbank financial services, together with electronic banking channels. By the mid-2020s the bank had built a presence across the Shenzhen-Hong Kong boundary, connecting onshore and offshore markets. It aligned itself with national strategy, focusing on the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Shenzhen pilot demonstration area under the themes of serving openness, livelihoods and innovation. As of the end of 2025 it reported registered capital of RMB 4.15 billion and total net capital of RMB 18 billion. It has held a 'AAA' issuer credit rating with a stable outlook from China Chengxin International Credit Rating Co., Ltd. continuously since 2018, and has been designated a Shenzhen headquarters enterprise. It operates branches in Shenzhen and Guangzhou.
