Overview

Chinabank is the consumer-facing brand of China Banking Corporation, a Philippine bank established in 1920. It began as the first privately owned local commercial bank in the Philippines and initially focused on the financial needs of Chinese-Filipino merchants and entrepreneurs. Its early approach reflected the importance of trust-based commercial relationships, including lending and account-opening practices that did not always rely on the collateral requirements commonly associated with Western banking models at the time. The bank opened its first office on Rosario Street, now Quintin Paredes Street, in Binondo, Manila, a major center of Chinese-Filipino commerce. It later established offices in Amoy and Shanghai, although both overseas branches were closed in 1944 as political and wartime conditions in China deteriorated. Chinabank temporarily suspended operations during the Japanese occupation of Manila in World War II and reopened in 1945 after safeguarding assets with assistance from Philippine and United States authorities. It subsequently supported postwar reconstruction by financing businesses and entrepreneurs in industries important to economic recovery. Chinabank expanded beyond Manila with a Cebu branch in 1949 and became an early technology adopter. In 1969, it computerized its operations and became the first bank in Southeast Asia reported to have processed deposit accounts online. It introduced later generations of banking technology through an upgraded online system, the TellerCard ATM account, telephone banking, internet banking, cash-management services, remittance products, and participation in BancNet, the Philippine ATM network established by Chinabank and other banks in 1990. The institution received a universal banking license in 1991, enabling it to broaden its activities beyond traditional commercial banking. Its offerings developed to include consumer lending, deposit and checking products, corporate finance, investment and trust services, cash management, remittances, capital-markets services, insurance brokerage, bancassurance, stock brokerage, and other financial services. The bank also pursued growth through subsidiaries, acquisitions, and partnerships. These included the creation of China Bank Savings, the acquisition of Manila Bank, the formation of a bancassurance venture with Manulife, the acquisition of Unity Bank and Planters Development Bank, and the development of China Bank Capital and China Bank Securities. Chinabank entered the credit-card market through a Mastercard partnership in 2013. Its portfolio subsequently expanded from Prime, Platinum, and World Mastercard products to include Cash Rewards, Freedom, and Destinations cards. China Bank Savings has served customers ranging from entry-level savers and first-time borrowers to households building assets, while the broader group has continued to serve corporate and institutional clients. The bank marked its centenary in 2020. A restoration of its original Binondo headquarters, begun in 2018, was completed and inaugurated in 2021 after pandemic-related delays. The building received historical and cultural-property recognition from Philippine heritage authorities. Chinabank also approved a Centennial Stock Grant Plan for eligible regular employees. In 2024, the bank refreshed its visual identity with a stylized CBC monogram, the tagline “Focused on You,” a new digital campaign, and Michelle Dee as its first brand ambassador. In June 2024, its Philippine Stock Exchange symbol changed from CHIB to CBC. Chinabank is described in reference material as the fourth-largest private universal bank in the Philippines and has received recognition for banking performance, corporate governance, and employer practices.

History

China Banking Corporation opened in Binondo, Manila, on August 16, 1920. It was founded by Dee C. Chuan, Albino SyCip, Guillermo A. CuUnjieng Sr., Carlos T. Palanca Sr., and other business leaders. The bank was created as a locally owned alternative for the growing Chinese-Filipino commercial community, whose lending needs were not always well served by institutions applying imported banking conventions. Chinabank’s early business model placed particular value on commercial reputation and trust, allowing it to establish relationships with merchants and suppliers through relatively small loans and credit accounts. J. W. McFerran served as the first general manager, followed by Eugene E. Wing, who managed the bank until 1936. Chinabank completed its first headquarters in Binondo in 1924 and became one of the earliest companies listed on the Manila Stock Exchange in 1927. Its initial international expansion took the form of branches in Amoy in 1925 and Shanghai in 1929. Both were closed in 1944 because changing political conditions made continued operation in China impractical. The Japanese invasion and occupation of Manila forced Chinabank to close in 1942. Before the closure, bank officials transferred deposits and assets for safekeeping with the assistance of United States and Philippine authorities. With the cooperation of the Bureau of Banking and access to safeguarded overseas assets, the institution resumed operations in 1945. In the postwar period, it helped finance reconstruction and supported entrepreneurs in industries central to economic recovery. It opened its first branch outside Manila in Cebu in 1949. Technology became a recurring part of the bank’s development. Chinabank computerized its operations in 1969 and was described as the first bank in Southeast Asia to process deposit accounts online. That year also saw the completion of a new 15-story headquarters in Makati. The bank upgraded its online systems in 1988, introduced the TellerCard ATM account and TellerPhone telephone-banking service, and joined seven other banks in establishing BancNet in 1990. A universal banking license obtained in 1991 enabled Chinabank to expand into a broader range of financial activities. It introduced HomePlus and AutoPlus consumer loans in 1994, China Check Plus in 1996, and its first offshore capital-markets issue, a US$50 million floating-rate certificate of deposit, also in 1996. Cash-management services followed in 2004, while internet banking and remittance services were introduced in 2006. The bank also began an aggressive branch-expansion program during that period. Chinabank’s growth strategy subsequently relied on a combination of internal expansion, subsidiaries, acquisitions, and partnerships. It formed Manulife China Bank Life Assurance Corporation with Manulife in 2007 and acquired a majority interest in Manila Bank. China Bank Savings began operations in 2008 as a thrift-bank subsidiary serving customers across different stages of financial development. Chinabank acquired Unity Bank in 2012 and merged it into China Bank Savings in 2014; it also acquired Planters Development Bank in 2014. The group’s related businesses include capital-markets, securities, property and technology, insurance-brokerage, and bancassurance operations. The bank entered the Mastercard credit-card market in 2013 with Prime, Platinum, and World products. It later added Cash Rewards and Freedom cards in 2021 and Destinations cards in 2023. In 2020, Chinabank celebrated its centenary and approved a stock grant for qualifying regular employees. The restoration of its original Binondo headquarters, started in 2018, was inaugurated in 2021 and received heritage recognition from Philippine authorities. In 2024, Chinabank modernized its brand identity with a CBC monogram, the “Focused on You” tagline, a related jingle and digital campaign, and Michelle Dee as brand ambassador. Its Philippine Stock Exchange code was changed from CHIB to CBC on June 19, 2024. The bank continues to operate as a Philippine universal banking group with retail, corporate, investment, trust, payment, remittance, insurance, brokerage, and capital-markets capabilities.
