Overview

China Eastern Airlines Corporation Limited, commonly branded as China Eastern, is one of China's three major state-controlled airline groups alongside Air China and China Southern Airlines. Its principal headquarters are in Shanghai, where it operates major hubs at Shanghai Pudong International Airport and Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport. The airline also maintains important operating positions through subsidiaries and affiliated carriers, including Shanghai Airlines, China United Airlines, China Eastern Yunnan Airlines and China Cargo Airlines. Established on 25 June 1988 under the former East China regional administration of the Civil Aviation Administration of China, China Eastern developed from a regional state aviation organization into a large network carrier. Its business includes scheduled passenger transportation, air cargo, loyalty services, aviation tourism and related airline-support activities. The group serves China's large domestic market while connecting Shanghai and other Chinese cities with destinations across Asia, Europe, North America, Australia and other international regions. China Eastern is a full-service airline. Its passenger proposition spans economy, premium economy, business and selected first-class cabins, with the exact offering varying by aircraft type and route. Long-haul aircraft may provide lie-flat seating, enclosed premium suites, onboard entertainment and meal service, while narrow-body aircraft primarily support domestic and regional flying. The Eastern Miles frequent-flyer program allows members to earn and redeem mileage through China Eastern, Shanghai Airlines, China United Airlines and selected partners. The airline has historically used a mixed Airbus, Boeing and Chinese-built aircraft fleet. The Airbus A320 family forms an important part of its short- and medium-haul operation, while wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A330, Airbus A350, Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 support long-haul and high-density routes. China Eastern became an early operator of China's COMAC ARJ21 and C919 aircraft through OTT Airlines and its broader fleet-development program, linking the group to the development of China's domestic commercial-aircraft industry. China Eastern became a member of the SkyTeam alliance in 2011 together with Shanghai Airlines. It has maintained significant commercial cooperation with Delta Air Lines, including codesharing, network coordination and an equity partnership announced in 2015. The airline has also pursued cooperation with carriers in Europe, the Americas and other regions to expand connectivity beyond its own aircraft network. The company remains majority state-controlled while its shares trade publicly in mainland China and Hong Kong. Its identity is closely associated with Shanghai's role as an international aviation hub and with the wider China Eastern Air Holding group. China Eastern's present strategy combines domestic network scale, international restoration and growth, fleet modernization, alliance connectivity, cargo capability and the gradual introduction of domestically produced aircraft. Since 2025, the reported corporate slogan has been “Connecting all the wonders of the world.”

History

China Eastern Airlines was formed on 25 June 1988 under the East China regional administration of China's civil aviation authority. Its creation reflected the restructuring and regional development of the country's state aviation system. From its Shanghai base, the airline expanded scheduled domestic services and gradually developed an international network. A major early corporate turning point came in 1997, when China Eastern took over China General Aviation. In the same period it became the first Chinese airline to offer shares on an international market, an important step in the commercialization and public financing of a state-controlled carrier. In 1998, it joined with COSCO to establish China Cargo Airlines, creating a dedicated cargo platform connected to the airline's passenger network and Shanghai's growing logistics market. The group continued to consolidate aviation assets in the early 2000s. It completed the takeover of Great Wall Airlines in 2001, and in 2003 China Yunnan Airlines and China Northwest Airlines were merged into China Eastern. These transactions expanded its regional reach and strengthened its position in western and southwestern China while adding scale to the Shanghai-centered network. China Eastern attracted international strategic-investment interest during the 2000s. Singapore Airlines and Temasek Holdings proposed acquiring a combined minority stake, while Air China and Cathay Pacific were also involved in the competitive and shareholder debate surrounding the proposed transaction. The proposed Singapore Airlines investment did not ultimately proceed after opposition from shareholders and competing strategic interests. The episode nevertheless demonstrated the strategic importance of China Eastern's Shanghai platform and the value placed on access to China's aviation market. In 2009, China Eastern announced an agreement to merge with Shanghai Airlines. The transaction was completed in February 2010. Shanghai Airlines became a wholly owned subsidiary while retaining its own brand and livery, allowing the combined group to consolidate its Shanghai operations and reduce direct competition at the city's airports. China Eastern also acquired China United Airlines in 2010, adding a lower-cost domestic operating platform based in Beijing. The airline's international cooperation expanded during this period. China Eastern and Delta Air Lines developed a codeshare relationship beginning in 2010, followed by China Eastern's entry into SkyTeam in 2011. The relationship with Delta was subsequently strengthened through broader network cooperation and Delta's 2015 purchase of a minority equity stake. China Eastern also explored a joint venture with Qantas for Jetstar Hong Kong, but the proposed low-cost carrier did not receive an operating licence and the investment was later terminated. Fleet renewal has been a continuing feature of the company's development. China Eastern became an early Airbus customer in China and built much of its short- and medium-haul fleet around the A320 family. It later added A330, Boeing 777, Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 aircraft for long-haul and premium services. The airline cancelled an earlier Boeing 787 order after delivery delays and substituted additional Boeing 737 aircraft. In the 2020s, the group began introducing Chinese-built aircraft, including the COMAC ARJ21 and C919, through OTT Airlines and other operations. China Eastern has also modernized its brand and customer proposition. A new logo and livery were introduced in 2014, while premium cabins, loyalty services and digital distribution continued to evolve. Its Eastern Miles program serves China Eastern and participating subsidiaries, offering mileage earning, redemption and tier benefits. Cargo remains an important business, supported by China Cargo Airlines and the Shanghai airport system. The airline suffered a major operational tragedy on 21 March 2022, when Flight MU5735 crashed in Guangxi during a domestic service from Kunming to Guangzhou, killing all 132 occupants. The accident became one of the most significant events in the modern history of Chinese commercial aviation. China Eastern subsequently continued operating as a major state-controlled network carrier, with its long-term development shaped by China's domestic travel market, international connectivity, aircraft modernization, alliance partnerships and Shanghai's role as an aviation gateway.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China published a preliminary investigation report in April, and the investigation still needs to be carried out in depth.
