History

Chimoto Coffee traces its origin to founder Kohei Shibahara, who ran a Japanese grocery store in Buenos Aires, Argentina, encountered roasting at a local coffee shop, brought coffee culture back to Japan, and began roasting coffee in Yotsuya, Tokyo. In February 1927 he established Chimoto Shoten in Yotsuya, Tokyo, and started coffee wholesaling. In April 1969 the organization was reorganized from a limited partnership (gōshi kaisha) into a stock company (kabushiki kaisha) with capital of 9 million yen, becoming Chimoto Coffee Co., Ltd. In October 1972 a central factory was built in Matsumoto, Mishima, Shizuoka, equipped with the latest roaster from German maker Gothot. In June 1985 the central factory was relocated to Numazu, Shizuoka, completing a new computer-controlled factory. In November 1987 a Nagoya branch moved into a new building in Nakamura-ku, Nagoya. In December 2000 the central factory obtained ISO9002 certification; in April 2001 it obtained certification as a manufacturer of processed organic agricultural products (coffee); in December 2001 it obtained ISO9001:2000 certification; and in February 2009 it obtained Good Inside certification. The company states it has pursued 'delicious coffee' since its 1927 founding and opened an online shop ahead of its 100th anniversary.
