Overview

Chill Mountain Rec is an independent Japanese music label based in Osaka, founded in 2015. It grew out of the Chill Mountain Camping Music Festival, an annual open-air event started in 2005 in the mountains of Kawachinagano by a collective of DJs, producers, designers, and artists including Gr◯un土, Mt.chills, Tossy, m◎m◎, Barba, and Chillreru. The festival ran for ten years and built a wide network of music enthusiasts and artists across Japan. Members also ran a DJ café called Chill Mountain Hutte in Osaka for four years and other creative ventures. In 2015, with support from mastering engineer Kabamix, they launched the label to release their own music and works. Since then, Chill Mountain Rec has put out numerous releases by Japanese and international artists, including Ground, Akira Arasawa, ALTz, and Isami. The label is known for its eclectic electronic and dance music, often with a chill, organic, or experimental vibe. It has released over 50 works, including EPs, albums, and 7-inch records. The label continues to be active, with recent releases in 2024.

History

Chill Mountain Rec's history begins with the Chill Mountain Camping Music Festival, launched in 2005 in the deep mountains of Kawachinagano, near Osaka. The festival was founded by a collective of six individuals: Gr◯un土 (DJ, trackmaker, producer), Mt.chills (design/screenprint), Tossy (DJ, trackmaker), m◎m◎ (decorator, bottled food maker), Barba (woodworker, carpenter, decorator), and Chillreru (ceramic artist). Held annually in autumn for ten years, the event attracted music enthusiasts and open-air party lovers from across Japan, expanding a network of artists and organizers beyond the Kansai region. Parallel to the festival, several members ran a DJ café called Chill Mountain Hutte in Osaka for four years, while Tossy and m◎m◎ operated a project called Kujirauo for three years. These activities helped broaden their community and creative reach. In 2015, the collective launched the music label Chill Mountain Rec, supported by Osaka-based mastering engineer Kabamix. The label was created to release their own music and works, but quickly grew to include artists from Japan and abroad. Over the years, Chill Mountain Rec has released numerous works, including EPs, albums, and 7-inch records, by artists such as Ground, Akira Arasawa, ALTz, and Isami. The label has built an international network, with many overseas artists expressing interest in releasing on it. By 2023, the label had reached its 50th release, an album by Akira Arasawa. In 2024, it continued with new music, including Ground's 'Sorani saku renge 空に咲く蓮華' (CMR-51). The label remains active and true to its roots in chill, electronic, and dance music.
