Overview

Children's Book Trust (CBT) is an Indian publisher dedicated to children's literature, founded in 1957 by renowned cartoonist K. Shankar Pillai and housed at Nehru House in New Delhi. It describes itself as India's pioneer publisher of children's books, with more than 1000 published titles spanning folktales, science and fiction in English, Hindi and regional languages. Beyond publishing, CBT promotes creative talent through the annual Competition for Writers of Children's Books, the monthly Children's World magazine, and the Dr. B.C. Roy Memorial Children's Reading Room and Library.

History

Children's Book Trust was founded by Shankar in 1957 and came to be housed in Nehru House, which was inaugurated by the President of India Dr. S. Radhakrishnan on November 30, 1965. As pioneer publishers of children's books in India, CBT set for itself the target of promoting well written, well illustrated and well designed books for children, including books that help children better appreciate India's cultural heritage. Its early output included playful animal fantasies published as Panchatantra tales and retold folktales; the Trust gradually turned toward reality issues such as teenage problems, scientific and technological advances, school and sports dilemmas, environmental degradation, contributions of eminent men and women in India's progress, and the changing mindset of ordinary people. This change came about with the launch of the Competition for Writers of Children's Books in 1978, which diversified subjects into categories including General Fiction, Science Fiction, Indian History/Heritage, Natural History, Travelogue, Non-Fiction/Information, Popular Science, Great Institutions, Short Stories/Humour Stories, Short Plays/Dramas, and Read-Aloud Books. The Trust's founder, K. Shankar Pillai (July 31, 1902 – December 26, 1989), was a famous cartoonist who brought out a political magazine called 'Shankar's Weekly'; under its auspices the Shankar's International Children's Competition was organized in 1949, initially inviting paintings and writings from children in India, with about 3,000 entries received, and the following year opened to children worldwide.
