Overview

Chery New Energy (奇瑞新能源) was the dedicated electric-vehicle arm of the Chinese automaker Chery Automobile, headquartered in Wuhu, Anhui Province. It was established in April 2010, when Chery decided to enter what was then a niche electric-vehicle sector, and it operated as a distinct division focused on battery-powered passenger cars. Its first product, the Chery QQ3EV, an electric variant of the QQ3 city car, was launched in September 2010 and remained the division's only offering for much of its early life. Over the following decade the brand gradually broadened its line-up. The eQ replaced the QQ3EV in 2014, and from 2017 onward the range expanded with electric versions of existing Chery models such as the Tiggo 3xe crossover and the Arrizo 5e sedan, alongside the first purpose-built EV, the small eQ1 hatchback. In the early 2020s Chery New Energy shifted toward dedicated electric platforms, introducing the eQ5 crossover and the QQ Ice Cream microcar, the latter positioned against the popular Wuling Hongguang Mini EV. Chery New Energy operated exclusively in the Chinese market as a sub-brand of Chery Automobile. In 2025 the division was folded into Chery itself, with only selected urban models continuing in production as part of the parent company's portfolio. The brand is therefore best understood as a transitional electric-vehicle unit that helped Chery build capability in electrification before being integrated back into the main marque.

History

Chery New Energy was created in April 2010, when the Chinese automaker Chery decided to enter the then-niche electric-vehicle industry and set up a division dedicated to producing electrically powered vehicles. In September of the same year, the division's first product was launched: the Chery QQ3EV, an electric variant of the QQ3 model. For the remainder of the 2010s, the QQ3EV remained the division's only product. In 2014, the QQ3EV was replaced by the more modern eQ, which was based on the next generation of the city hatchback. It was only three years later, in 2017, that the range was expanded with further products. First came the electric equivalent of the Tiggo 3x, the Tiggo 3xe crossover, together with the Arrizo 5e sedan, which was also based on an existing model. In the same year, Chery New Energy presented its first model developed from the ground up without a combustion-engine counterpart: the small eQ1 hatchback. In 2019, the last product that was merely an electric variant of an existing Chery model joined the line-up: the Tiggo e crossover. At the start of the 2020s, Chery New Energy began to expand its portfolio with designs built from the outset for electric drive, starting with the large eQ5 crossover. In August 2021, the QQ Ice Cream microcar was presented as a response to the popularity of the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV. In 2025, the division was incorporated into Chery, and only selected urban products remained in production as an integral part of the parent company's portfolio.
