Overview

ChatGPT Enterprise is OpenAI’s business-oriented ChatGPT offering for organizations that need to deploy generative AI across employees while maintaining centralized governance over access, data, integrations, and usage. OpenAI introduced the service on August 28, 2023, after observing rapid adoption of ChatGPT inside large companies and demand for a managed alternative to individual accounts. The offering was positioned as a way for organizations to use advanced language-model capabilities for knowledge work, software development, analysis, communications, research, customer operations, and internal automation without treating business use as an unmanaged consumer activity. At launch, ChatGPT Enterprise combined access to OpenAI’s then-current high-capability models with enterprise features such as faster and higher-volume usage, longer context windows, advanced data analysis, shareable chat templates, single sign-on, domain verification, bulk member management, usage analytics, and an administrative console. OpenAI also stated that customer prompts and company data would not be used to train its models by default. The initial launch described a 32K-token context window, later product updates and model generations expanded the capabilities available to Enterprise workspaces. Because ChatGPT is continuously updated, the precise models, limits, tools, and entitlements available to an Enterprise customer can vary by contract, workspace configuration, region, and product release. The product’s central distinction is not simply access to a stronger chatbot. It is the combination of an AI assistant with an organizational control plane. Enterprise administrators can manage membership, authentication, permissions, retention settings, GPT availability, connectors, apps, and other workspace capabilities. Dedicated Enterprise workspaces separate company-managed conversations, files, and custom GPTs from personal use, although an organization may establish policies governing how managed accounts are used and what administrators can access, retain, export, audit, or delete. This makes ChatGPT Enterprise relevant to information-security, legal, compliance, procurement, IT, and business-transformation teams as well as ordinary end users. OpenAI has progressively expanded the product beyond conversational question answering. Enterprise users can employ advanced data analysis for spreadsheets and files, create or administer custom GPTs, use web search and deep-research functions where enabled, and connect approved internal systems. Connector and company-knowledge capabilities allow organizations to bring context from tools such as Google Drive, SharePoint, Dropbox, Box, Slack, GitHub, Notion, HubSpot, Zendesk, Asana, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, and other supported services into ChatGPT. Permission-aware retrieval is intended to preserve the access rights already established in connected systems. Custom connectors based on the Model Context Protocol can also support organization-specific workflows, subject to administrator review and deployment controls. Security and compliance remain the product’s principal commercial differentiators. OpenAI describes encryption at rest and in transit, SAML single sign-on, domain verification, role-based permissions, configurable retention, audit and compliance tooling, data-residency options, and Enterprise Key Management for eligible customers. The service is supported by OpenAI’s broader business-data commitments, including default non-training of business inputs and outputs, though organizations remain responsible for their own deployment policies, access controls, human review, and compliance decisions. OpenAI supports alignment with frameworks and laws including SOC 2 Type 2, ISO/IEC 27001-family certifications, GDPR, CCPA, and other regulatory requirements, with applicability depending on the service and customer configuration. History

ChatGPT Enterprise emerged from the rapid organizational adoption of ChatGPT following its public release on November 30, 2022. Although ChatGPT initially gained attention as a consumer-facing conversational system, companies quickly began experimenting with it for drafting, coding, analysis, research, customer support, communications, and internal knowledge work. OpenAI later said that registered ChatGPT accounts associated with corporate email domains appeared in more than 80 percent of Fortune 500 companies by the time Enterprise launched. That adoption created a demand for centralized procurement, security review, identity management, and data-governance controls that individual accounts and consumer subscriptions did not provide. OpenAI formally introduced ChatGPT Enterprise on August 28, 2023. The launch framed the product as a managed AI assistant for organizations rather than merely a premium version of ChatGPT. The first release combined higher-speed and higher-volume access to GPT-4 with longer context windows, advanced data analysis, shareable chat templates, API credits, SSO, domain verification, bulk member management, an administrative console, and usage analytics. OpenAI also announced a policy that customer prompts and company data would not be used to train its models by default. Early users included Block, Canva, Carlyle, The Estée Lauder Companies, PwC, and Zapier, which helped establish the brand’s initial association with large-scale experimentation and workforce productivity. During 2024, OpenAI concentrated on making Enterprise deployments more governable. The company expanded administrative controls for user groups, GPT sharing, third-party GPTs, ownership transfers, and workspace-wide capabilities. It also developed compliance-oriented interfaces that could expose workspace metadata and activity to customers’ e-discovery, data-loss-prevention, and security-information systems. These changes reflected a shift from a standalone chat interface toward a platform that could be integrated into corporate identity, risk, and oversight processes. OpenAI’s broader privacy and security program became an increasingly important part of the product’s identity. Enterprise commitments included encryption at rest and in transit, default non-training of business inputs and outputs, configurable retention for eligible customers, SAML SSO, domain verification, data-residency options, and support for regulatory and contractual documentation such as data-processing addenda. Later updates added Enterprise Key Management, allowing certain customers to control encryption keys through external key-management systems. OpenAI has described business offerings as aligned with SOC 2 Type 2 and ISO/IEC security and privacy standards, while emphasizing that specific compliance outcomes depend on customer configuration and use. In 2025, ChatGPT Enterprise expanded from document and conversation assistance into internal knowledge retrieval and connected workflows. OpenAI introduced connectors for services including Google Drive, SharePoint, Dropbox, Box, Slack, GitHub, Microsoft Teams, Gmail, Google Calendar, HubSpot, and other enterprise systems. The company’s company-knowledge approach was designed to respect the permissions already established in source applications, so that ChatGPT would not automatically grant users access to information they could not otherwise view. Administrators could enable connectors, assign access through role-based controls, and review or restrict custom integrations. The Enterprise product also began incorporating more advanced research, agentic, and coding capabilities as those features became part of ChatGPT’s broader product family. Deep research, ChatGPT agent, Codex, apps, and Model Context Protocol-based connectors created opportunities for multi-step work such as researching, preparing analyses, modifying files, answering codebase questions, and initiating actions in connected tools. These capabilities increased the product’s potential value but also made administrator controls, website restrictions, sandboxing, approval processes, and data governance more important. ChatGPT Enterprise is sold through OpenAI’s enterprise-sales and customer-success channels, with capabilities and pricing potentially varying by contract and workspace configuration. In 2025, OpenAI introduced flexible credit-based access for advanced models and features while preserving broad access to core ChatGPT capabilities under the described Enterprise model. As of 2026, ChatGPT Enterprise remains an active OpenAI product and is best understood as an organizational operating layer for ChatGPT: a controlled environment where employees can use generative AI, internal knowledge, custom assistants, connected applications, data-analysis tools, and coding agents under company-defined security and administrative policies.

ChatGPT conversation-history and payment-information exposure incident

OpenAI disclosed that a software-library bug caused some users to see titles from other users’ active chat histories and may have exposed limited payment-related information for a subset of ChatGPT Plus users during a nine-hour window. OpenAI said it patched the issue and restored service. The incident involved the wider ChatGPT service and was not described as a ChatGPT Enterprise-specific breach, but it became part of the broader security context surrounding OpenAI’s business offerings.
