Overview

Established in 1890, it is the site of the Barossa Valley's first winery and some of its first vines, planted in 1843. The Geber family have been custodians of the estate since 1998, handcrafting collectable Barossa wines. The winery produces limited-release wines made with minimal intervention, including the 'Old Vine Expressions' and 'The Everest' ranges.

History

Château Tanunda was established in 1890 and is the site of some of the Barossa Valley's first vines, planted in 1843, as well as its first winery. Its origins trace back to the onset of phylloxera in Europe's vineyards; the founder's vision was to build the first winemaking Château in Australia that would rival the French in production and quality. At the time it became the largest winery in the Southern Hemisphere, with wines made from grapes produced by 560 local growers and shipped to a wine-starved Europe. The Geber family have been custodians of the estate since 1998, handcrafting collectable Barossa wines, and the 135-year-old estate is now celebrated among the top winemaking estates in Australia.
