Overview
Château Kirwan is a wine estate in Margaux whose name comes from the Irishman Mark Kirwan, heir to a line of merchants, who settled in Bordeaux in the mid-18th century. The property was ranked among the Third Growths (3e Grands Crus Classés) of the Médoc in 1855. In 1926 it entered the ownership of the Schÿler family, established in Bordeaux since 1739.
History
The estate owes its name to the Irishman Mark Kirwan, heir to a line of merchants, who settled in Bordeaux in the mid-18th century. The Kirwans came from Galway, a merchant city in western Ireland, and were part of the emigration to France known as the 'Wine Geese'. Mark Kirwan gave his name to the Domaine de Lassalle and established the reputation of its wines. The year 1855 marked a turning point in Kirwan's history, when it rose to the top of the Third Growths (3e Grands Crus Classés) of the Médoc. That same year Camille Godard, a botanist and lover of fine stone who created the Parc Bordelais, transformed Kirwan by renovating the château and designing a majestic park. In 1926, Château Kirwan entered the ownership of the Schÿler family, established in Bordeaux since 1739 and managing the oldest family wine-trading house still in activity. Armand Schÿler, 5th generation of the name, concluded an 'abonnement' contract on each future harvest in 1902 and finalized the acquisition of the property a decade later.
