Overview
Chamanna Jenatsch (Romansh for 'Jenatsch Hut') is a mountain hut owned and operated by the Sektion Bernina of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It sits at 2,651 metres above sea level in the Val Bever in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, on a knoll between Piz Picuogl and Piz Jenatsch. It is the highest SAC hut in Graubünden. The hut is named after Jörg Jenatsch, a 17th-century pastor, military leader and Graubünden folk hero who fought in the Thirty Years' War. The hut was built in 1908, rebuilt in 1974 and completely reconstructed in 1993. It offers 75 dormitory beds across five rooms (with 4 to 19 bunks each), plus three double rooms named Armonia Dschimels, Muntanella Suita and Dschember Suita. Since summer 2017 a small wooden house with a double bed and a wood-fired sauna have been added. The three-storey hut is staffed from late June to about 20 October, over Christmas and New Year, and from early February to about late April. It has toilets and washing facilities, running water even in winter, a landline telephone and an emergency radio. As a SAC hut, Chamanna Jenatsch is not a hotel: guests share a communal dinner at 18:30, there is no à la carte service in the evening, and a hut sleeping bag is mandatory. There is no mobile phone reception in the Val Bever and around the hut, and no Wi-Fi because the satellite connection is very limited. Warm water is insufficient for showers; electricity and hot water are generated on site using solar and hydro power. The hut is a starting point for hikes along marked mountain trails and for glacier, ski and mountaineering tours in a remote, quiet landscape. Nearby peaks include Piz Jenatsch, Piz d'Agnel, Tschima da Flix, Piz Calderas, Piz d'Err, Piz Picuogl, Piz Surgonda, Piz Suvretta and Piz Traunter Ovas. It is a stage point on the demanding Haute Route Graubünden (also Bündner Haute Route) from the Julier Pass to the Flüela Pass, and on the Alpenpässe-Weg. Access routes include from Spinas (1,816 m) through the Val Bever past Alp Suvretta (T2, 4 hours); from the Julier Pass via Val d'Agnel and Fuorcla d'Agnel (T3, 3.5 hours); over Pass Suvretta from Piz Nair, Corviglia or Champfèr (T4, 3.5–5 hours); from Tigias on Alp Flix via Fuorcla da Flix (T4, 4.5 hours); and from Naz near Preda in the Albula valley via Fuorcla da Bever (T5, 6.5 hours). The hut is operated by Jill, Dani and their team, and the summer season begins on 20 June 2026 according to the official website.
History
Chamanna Jenatsch was built in 1908 by the Sektion Bernina of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It was renovated in 1974 and completely rebuilt in 1993. The hut is named after Jörg Jenatsch, a rebellious pastor, military leader and Graubünden folk hero who was responsible for the liberation of part of what is now the canton of Graubünden during the Thirty Years' War by forcing the French Duke Henri de Rohan, who was hostile to Spain, to withdraw. The hut lies at 2,651 metres above sea level in the Val Bever on a knoll (the adjacent house sits at 2,653 metres) between Piz Picuogl and Piz Jenatsch, making it the highest SAC hut in Graubünden. It offers 75 beds in five rooms with 4 to 19 bunks each, plus three double rooms named Armonia Dschimels, Muntanella Suita and Dschember Suita. Since summer 2017 a small wooden house with a double bed and a wood-fired sauna have been added. The three-storey hut is staffed from late June to about 20 October, over Christmas/New Year and from early February to about late April. It has toilets and washing facilities in the house, running water even in winter, a landline telephone and an emergency radio. The hut is a stage point on the demanding, partly pathless long-distance Haute Route Graubünden (also Bündner Haute Route) from the Julier Pass to the Flüela Pass, and on the Alpenpässe-Weg (destination of the first stage). It is also a base for glacier, ski and mountaineering tours in a remote, quiet landscape, with nearby peaks including Piz Jenatsch, Piz d'Agnel, Tschima da Flix, Piz Calderas, Piz d'Err, Piz Picuogl, Piz Surgonda, Piz Suvretta and Piz Traunter Ovas.
