History

Chalakudy was historically a major marketing centre in the Mukundapuram taluk of the former Kochi kingdom. It was a small town situated outside the Nedumkotta fort on the northern border of Travancore. The name Chalakudy is said to derive from 'Shaladhvajam' (Shalakodi) as mentioned in the astrological text 'Jyothishasamhitha', or from 'Shalakudi', a place where people from inside and outside Kerala came to study Vedas and martial arts at the Moozhikulam Shala during the Second Chera dynasty, and stayed in accommodations called 'kudi' on the banks of the Chalakudy River. Over time, Shalakudi became Chalakudy. The town's location on the border of the old Kochi and Travancore kingdoms gave it historical importance. Today, Chalakudy Municipality administers the town, which is traversed by National Highway 47 and the Ernakulam–Shoranur railway line.
