Overview

Comic Heaven (コミックヘヴン) is a Japanese manga anthology magazine published by Nihon Bungeisha. It was launched on August 9, 2012, as a rebranding of the predecessor magazine Sakura Hearts, which had run from 2010 to 2012. The magazine is positioned as a 'bishōjo comic magazine full of strong stimulation' and primarily features works by authors with backgrounds in adult manga. It is published as a special issue of Weekly Manga Goraku, initially bimonthly and later monthly from March 2023. The magazine has produced hits such as 'Chūsotsu Rōdōsha kara Hajimeru Kōkō Seikatsu' (150万 copies) and 'Sundere!' (30万 copies). Since April 2021, it has also been available digitally following Nihon Bungeisha's acquisition by Media Do. The magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary in August 2022.

History

Comic Heaven was preceded by Sakura Hearts (さくらハーツ), which was first published on December 9, 2010, as a special issue of Weekly Manga Goraku. Sakura Hearts focused on moe-style content with beautiful girl characters, and most of its contributors had backgrounds in adult manga. However, compared to competing magazines like Champion Red Ichigo (Akita Shoten) and Comic Sumomo (Futabasha), it featured less sexually explicit content and emphasized a 'shōnen' (boys') magazine identity with the catchphrase 'For hot hearts, for loving hearts!! Our new boys' comic magazine!!'. Sakura Hearts ended with its ninth issue on April 9, 2012. On August 9, 2012, it was rebranded as Comic Heaven. The new magazine inherited most of its serializations from Sakura Hearts. The name 'Comic Heaven' expresses the idea of 'manga = heaven'. Its catchphrase became 'Bishōjo comic magazine full of strong stimulation!!', marking a clear shift from the 'boys' magazine' emphasis to a 'seinen' (young men's) magazine with stronger erotic content, similar to competitors Ichigo and Sumomo. Around this time, Comic Q Girl (Jitsugyo no Nihon Sha) was launched on April 26, 2012, but ceased publication the same day. Sumomo ceased publication with its February 12, 2013 issue (VOL.16), and Ichigo ceased with its August 5, 2014 issue (VOL.45). Under these circumstances, Comic Heaven began producing hits: 'Chūsotsu Rōdōsha kara Hajimeru Kōkō Seikatsu' (by Sasaki Minoru) surpassed 1.5 million copies in print and digital, and 'Sundere!' (by Natsume Fumika) surpassed 300,000 copies. 'Chūsotsu Rōdōsha kara Hajimeru Kōkō Seikatsu' became the first serialized work to be adapted into an anime (a web anime distributed on the 'Anime Beans' app). In March 2021, Nihon Bungeisha came under the umbrella of Media Do, a major electronic book distributor. Consequently, from the 53rd issue released in April 2021, the magazine also began digital sales (priced the same as print, but digital release is about two weeks later than print). In August 2022, the magazine celebrated its 10th anniversary and announced a change in publication frequency from bimonthly to monthly. Starting with the May 2023 issue released in March 2023, it became a monthly magazine published around the 27th of each month.
