Overview
Château Falfas is a historical chateau and Bordeaux wine estate in Bayon-sur-Gironde (Gironde, France). Its château building was constructed in 1612 on one of the most beautiful hillsides of the commune of Bayon, and the estate's winegrowing tradition is described as very old, with an 1827 guide to Bordeaux already listing two of the area's leading crus, Tajac and the Chateau de Falfax, in the commune of Bayon.
History
The château building of Château Falfas was built in 1612 on one of the most beautiful hillsides of the commune of Bayon, and the estate is described as 'la gloire du Bourgeais'. Previously, in the 14th and 15th centuries, the estate belonged to the Seigneurs de Lansac, old sword nobility faithful to the crown of England, and at that time its wines were exported to the court of the Edwards of England. The château was then acquired in the 17th century by the sires de Riveaux, who left the current building its pure Louis XIII style. At the end of the 17th century, the château passed into the house of the president à mortier of the Parlement of Guyenne, Gaillard de Falfas, who had it restored and gave it his name. Winegrowing at Falfas is very old; already in 1827, the guide de l'étranger à Bordeaux noted: 'Two of the first crus of the region, Tajac and the Chateau de Falfax, are in the commune of Bayon.'
