Overview

Ceto-Verlag is the historical name of a German specialist publishing house for the energy and mineral-oil trade. Founded in Kassel in 1949, the company built its reputation on trade journalism for fuel dealers, heating contractors, chimney sweeps, architects and related professions. Its best-known product is the monthly trade magazine Brennstoffspiegel und Mineralölrundschau, which reports on energy markets, energy policy, fuels, lubricants, renewable and fossil energies, transport and filling stations. Alongside the magazine the publisher runs the news and market-data portal brennstoffspiegel.de and issues two to three books per year. The publisher is owned by UNITI Bundesverband mittelständischer Mineralölunternehmen, the German federal association of medium-sized mineral-oil companies. This ownership ties the publishing operation directly to the industry it covers, giving it privileged access to market data and association networks. In 2014 the company was renamed UNITI-Mediengruppe GmbH, and the Ceto-Verlag name was retired as the corporate identity, although it remains the historical designation of the business. Geographically the publisher has moved several times: founded in Kassel, it relocated to Leipzig at the end of 2001 and then to Berlin at the beginning of 2014, where it is now based. Its editorial focus is the German energy market, with nationwide end-consumer price reporting for heating oil and comparable energy products forming a distinctive part of its data offering. The group also publishes FUELS | LUBES | ENERGY, a monthly specialist magazine for the energy trade and lubricants sector that serves a similar readership and publishes extensive market data. As a trade publisher rather than a consumer media brand, Ceto-Verlag / UNITI-Mediengruppe occupies a niche but influential position: it is a B2B information provider whose readership consists of decision-makers in fuel distribution, heating technology and energy policy. Its titles are subscription-based and its websites function as trade news and database services for the German-speaking energy sector.

History

Ceto-Verlag was founded in Kassel in 1949, in the early years of the Federal Republic of Germany, to serve the information needs of the country's fuel and mineral-oil trade. From its base in Kassel it developed a portfolio of specialist publications, most prominently the monthly Brennstoffspiegel und Mineralölrundschau, which became a standard reference for fuel dealers, heating contractors and related trades. Over the decades the publisher expanded its coverage to include energy policy, renewable and fossil energies, transport and filling-station topics, and it built up market-data services, including nationwide end-consumer price reporting for heating oil and comparable energy products. At the end of 2001 the publisher relocated from Kassel to Leipzig, a move that placed it in one of Germany's established media and publishing cities. The Leipzig period lasted just over a decade. At the beginning of 2014 the company moved its headquarters again, this time to Berlin, and simultaneously changed its corporate name from Ceto-Verlag to UNITI-Mediengruppe GmbH. The renaming reflected its ownership by UNITI Bundesverband mittelständischer Mineralölunternehmen, the federal association of medium-sized mineral-oil companies, which had come to hold the publishing house. Under the UNITI-Mediengruppe identity the business continued to publish the Brennstoffspiegel and Mineralölrundschau monthly, to operate the news and database website brennstoffspiegel.de, and to issue two to three books per year. The group's editorial remit covers the energy market and energy policy; fuels, propellants and lubricants; renewable energies, fossil energies and energy reserves; and transport and filling stations. Its readership is concentrated in the German energy trade, heating construction, the chimney-sweeping trade, building planners and architects, and adjacent professions. In addition to the historical Brennstoffspiegel title, the group publishes FUELS | LUBES | ENERGY, a monthly specialist magazine for the energy trade and the lubricants sector, which also carries nationwide end-consumer price data for heating oil and energy-equivalent quantities of gas and other energy products, along with extensive market data. The Ceto-Verlag name survives as the historical designation of the business, while UNITI-Mediengruppe is the current operating identity.
