History

The institution that became Unifeob was founded on 4 November 1965 as Fundação Sanjoanense de Ensino, in São João da Boa Vista, in the interior of São Paulo state. Over the following decades it expanded its course offerings and integrated its academic programs. In 2002, its undergraduate and postgraduate courses were brought together under the name FIFEOB – Faculdades Integradas da Fundação de Ensino Octávio Bastos, reflecting a change in its statutes and a more consolidated institutional structure. In December 2003, after fulfilling all the requirements of the Brazilian Ministry of Education (MEC), FIFEOB was granted the status of Centro Universitário. With this new academic status, the institution adopted the name UNIFEOB – Centro Universitário da Fundação de Ensino Octávio Bastos. The Unifeob brand has since become the public face of the institution. Unifeob developed a broad portfolio of undergraduate courses across two campuses, covering fields such as health (Nursing, Physiotherapy, Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences), engineering (Civil, Agronomic), law, education, humanities, social sciences and management. It also built a significant postgraduate and extension program. In 1992 it created the Universidade da 3ª Idade (University of the Third Age), one of the pioneers of its kind in Brazil, extending educational opportunities to older adults. In 2018, Unifeob entered the distance-education modality, launching undergraduate EAD and semi-presential courses. This move aligned the institution with the growth of online higher education in Brazil and broadened its reach beyond its physical campuses. The official website highlights 60 years of activity, MEC-recognized courses, modern infrastructure with equipped laboratories and updated libraries, and teaching focused on employability. It also promotes scholarship entrance exams such as the Vestiba de Bolsas, with scholarships of up to 100%, and multiple admission routes including online vestibular, ENEM, transfer and second-degree entry. In 2026, the institution announced that its recognition as an Instituição Comunitária de Educação Superior had been renewed by MEC, reaffirming its community-oriented, non-profit character.
