Overview

The Centro Italiano Femminile (CIF) is a non-profit Italian women's association of Catholic inspiration, founded in October 1944 in Rome by Azione Cattolica and supported by the Vatican, with the approval of Pope Pius XII in December 1945. Its stated mission is to promote and defend the rights of women and families and to contribute to a more just and supportive society, valuing women's role in social, cultural and political life and promoting respect for human dignity and gender equality. CIF was born as a link between women and Christian-inspired associations to contribute to the reconstruction of the country through democratic participation, human promotion and solidarity. It is organized in a capillary network across the national territory, structured at municipal, provincial, regional and national levels, with groups of women who interact with institutions for the full exercise of citizenship rights. Its action is rooted in the social fabric and open to collaboration with women of different cultures. Over its more than 80 years of activity, CIF has worked in the fields of culture, education and women's training. It publishes the monthly magazine Cronache e opinioni. In 2002 it was included by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Scientific Research in the definitive list of accredited subjects for training activities for teachers and educators; in 2004 it was recognized among social promotion associations. In 2019 Cardinal Edoardo Menichelli was appointed ecclesiastical consultant. As of 2025 CIF operates throughout the national territory. CIF's commitment is based on the conviction that a just society must guarantee equal opportunities for all people, regardless of gender, age or social condition. Through its local sections it supports women and families, offers assistance, and carries out cultural, political and civil initiatives oriented toward human promotion, justice and peace.

History

The Centro Italiano Femminile (CIF) was founded in October 1944 in Rome by Azione Cattolica (Catholic Action) and supported by the Vatican, receiving the approval of Pope Pius XII in December 1945. It was established as a link between women and Christian-inspired associations to contribute to the reconstruction of the country through democratic participation, human promotion and solidarity. In its early years, CIF dedicated itself to internal organization—structured until the 1970s at national, provincial and municipal levels—and to promoting solidarity and assistance initiatives for former deportees of extermination camps, war veterans and children. Its first national president was Maria Federici, who served until 1950 and commented on the struggle for voting rights around the 1946 Italian political elections: "When in the coming years it will have entered the ranks of 'normal' things […] thinking back on the effort made […] we will laugh." CIF contributed to the cultural and political formation of Catholic women, supporting the Christian Democracy (Democrazia Cristiana) party. Under the presidency of Amalia Spingardi Valmarana in the 1950s, the Centro Italiano Femminile extended its presence throughout the country. On 3 December 1994, on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of its founding, the association was received in audience by Pope John Paul II. In 2002, CIF was included by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Scientific Research in the definitive list of accredited subjects for carrying out training activities for teachers and educators. In 2004 it was recognized among social promotion associations. On 1 April 2019, Cardinal Edoardo Menichelli was appointed ecclesiastical consultant. As of 2025, CIF operates throughout the national territory. The association publishes the monthly magazine Cronache e opinioni. Its presidents over the decades have included Maria Federici (1944–1950), Amalia Spingardi Valmarana (1950–1966), Alda Miceli (1966–1980), Maria Chiaia (1989–1998), Anna Maria Mauro Pastorino (2004–2009), Maria Pia Campanile Savatteri (2010–2019) and Renata Natili Micheli (2019–2025).
