Overview
Centrient Pharmaceuticals is a business-to-business manufacturer of foundational medicines — antibiotics, next-generation statins and anti-fungals. First established in 1869, the company describes a history of 150 years of innovation including 75 years in antibiotics production, and today reports being 1,800 people strong with operations on four continents. It manufactures intermediates and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) as well as made-to-order tablets, capsules and other finished dosage forms (FDFs).
History
Centrient Pharmaceuticals states that its story begins in 1869 in the town of Delft, the Netherlands, where, as the yeast and spirits company 'Nederlandsche Gist- en Spiritusfabriek', it created the building blocks for a 150-year track record in innovation. It became one of the first companies worldwide to produce life-saving antibiotics on an industrial scale in the 1940s. In 2000, Centrient changed how penicillin is manufactured, developing fermentation-based enzymatic production, described as a more environmentally sustainable way to manufacture antibiotics than the traditional solvent-based production process. In the decades since, it expanded globally through acquisitions and joint ventures, first in India and China, and then in Mexico, investing in supply chain diversification. Since 2014, it states it has led the industry in addressing the health threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
