Overview

The Centre franco-ontarien de ressources pédagogiques (CFORP), now commonly branded as Le Centre franco, is a Canadian organization and publisher dedicated to the development and vitality of French-language education in Ontario. Founded on 7 January 1974, it began with a mandate to reproduce and distribute teaching resources created by teachers, addressing a shortage of French-language pedagogical materials in Ontario's French-language schools. Its first director general was Gisèle Lalonde, who led a small team of five people working from a single classroom. Over the decades, the CFORP evolved into a multi-service education centre. Its activities span development and publishing (as a publishing house), professional training, multimedia production, programming, printing, and a bookstore, the Librairie du Centre. It publishes textbooks and a wide range of pedagogical resources, and carries out projects, programs, agreements, and partnerships intended to support schools, school boards, and other organizations in improving the quality of French-language education. The organization is governed by a 21-member board of directors that includes directors of education from Ontario's 12 French-language school boards, representatives of the Regroupement national des directions générales de l'éducation (RNDGÉ) from western/northern Canada and the Atlantic region, the leadership of the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO), the Association des gestionnaires de l'éducation franco-ontarienne (AGEFO), the Association des directions et directions adjointes des écoles franco-ontariennes, an ex-officio member from Ontario's Ministry of Education, and the CFORP's own director general. Gilles Leroux served as director general and secretary-treasurer; Claude Deschamps is the current director. In 2002 the CFORP moved into its own three-storey building on Donald Street in Ottawa, equipped with modern technology and housing all its services, including its own printing press. In 2009 it broadened its mandate to serve the wider Canadian francophonie. The Librairie du Centre, founded in 1992 and owned by the CFORP, reinvests all sales profits into producing new pedagogical resources for French-language schools. Today, under the Le Centre franco brand, the organization is a recognized reference for creating pedagogical resources and online courses and a leader in teacher training, contributing to educational excellence in French in Ontario.

History

The Centre franco-ontarien de ressources pédagogiques (CFORP) was founded on 7 January 1974. Its initial mandate was to reproduce and distribute resources developed by teachers in order to fill a gap in pedagogical resources in Ontario's French-language schools. Gisèle Lalonde became its first director general, assisted by a team of five people housed in a single classroom. Over the years, the CFORP grew into a multi-service education centre offering a diverse range of services: development and publishing (as a publishing house), professional training, multimedia production, programming, printing, and the Librairie du Centre bookstore. It publishes textbooks and various pedagogical resources and carries out projects, programs, agreements, partnerships, products, and services aimed at supporting schools, school boards, and other organizations in improving the quality of French-language education. In 1992 the Librairie du Centre was founded; it is owned by the CFORP, and all profits from bookstore sales are reinvested by the CFORP into producing new pedagogical resources for French-language schools. The bookstore carries Éditions CFORP titles, educational games, magazines and greeting cards, CDs and DVDs, interactive whiteboard (TBI) resources, and the Fonds littéraire des éditeurs canadiens-français. In 2002 the CFORP moved into its own premises on Donald Street in Ottawa: a modern three-storey building equipped with state-of-the-art technology, housing all its services, including its own printing press. In 2009 it broadened its mandate and increasingly served the entire Canadian francophonie. Gilles Leroux served as director general and secretary-treasurer of the CFORP. He holds a specialized bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Ottawa and the CMA (Certified Management Accountant) designation. An employee of the CFORP since 1987, he was its deputy director general from 1994 to 2008. The current director is Claude Deschamps. The organization's board of directors has 21 members: directors of education from Ontario's 12 French-language school boards; two members of the Regroupement national des directions générales de l'éducation (RNDGÉ) representing French-language school boards of western and northern Canada; two members of the RNDGÉ representing French-language school boards of the Atlantic region; the director general of the Association des enseignantes et des enseignants franco-ontariens (AEFO); the president of the Association des gestionnaires de l'éducation franco-ontarienne (AGEFO); the director general of the Association des directions et directions adjointes des écoles franco-ontariennes; an ex-officio member from Ontario's Ministry of Education (the person heading the Direction des politiques et programmes d'éducation en langue française); and the director general of the CFORP. Under the Le Centre franco brand, the organization today describes itself as the essential reference for creating pedagogical resources and online courses and a recognized leader in teacher training. Through a diversified service offering and innovative projects, it actively contributes to the development and excellence of French-language education in Ontario. Its current featured resources include interactive online financial literacy modules for Grade 10, updated mathematics resources for kindergarten, a digital citizenship quiz game for Grades 3–6, and the Minimag and webzines Mon mag à moi and QUAD9. It also offers professional development documents and a Zone IA series supporting responsible integration of artificial intelligence in schools.
