Overview
The Centre de la Méditerranée Moderne et Contemporaine (CMMC) is a research laboratory of Université Côte d'Azur (UniCA), located in Nice, France. Founded in 1968, it is registered as Unité Propre de Recherche (UPR) 1193. The centre brings together historians of the early modern and contemporary periods, specialists in cultural, social, economic and political history, civilisationists focusing on Italy and Spain, specialists of the Ottoman world, and geographers. Its research is organised around several programmes and activities, including conferences, study days, seminars, and support for young researchers. The CMMC also publishes the peer-reviewed journal Cahiers de la Méditerranée, founded in 1970 by historian André Nouschi. The journal focuses on the history of Mediterranean societies and the circulation of people, ideas, writings, goods and practices between the two shores from the 16th to the 21st century. It is available in print and electronic formats since 2001, hosted on OpenEdition Journals, and its back collection from 1970 to 2000 is freely accessible on Persée. The CMMC is a public research entity, not a commercial company, but it operates as an institutional brand within the French academic landscape. Its current director, since September 2024, is Barbara Meazzi, with Jean-Paul Pellegrinetti as deputy director. The centre is involved in funded research programmes, including projects supported by the French National Research Agency (ANR).
