Overview
The Central service for German translation (Dutch: Centrale dienst voor Duitse vertaling, CDDV; German: Zentrale Dienststelle für Deutsche Übersetzungen, ZDDÜ; French: Service central de traduction allemande, SCTA) is a translation service of the Belgian Federal Public Service Home Affairs. Based in Malmedy, it has been responsible since 1976 for translating Belgian legal texts and official documents — including laws, decrees, circulars and administrative documents — into German so that citizens of the German-speaking Community of Belgium can consult them in German. The service also maintains Semamdy, a trilingual (Dutch, German, French) terminology database containing roughly 40,000 words in the three national languages. Its website provides a single database of German translations of Belgian codes, laws, decrees and circulars, along with direct access to basic legal texts in areas such as labour law, tax and financial law, civil and judicial law, commercial and economic law, public and administrative law, social security law and criminal law. The CDDV translates codes and laws adopted by the Federal Parliament into German, translates federal norms (such as decrees) for other federal public services as an administrative service with accounting autonomy, prepares unofficial coordinated versions of codes translated into German, and feeds both the SEMAMDY terminology database and the TITREOFF database. The service celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of institutional translation work for Belgium's German-speaking community.
History
The Central service for German translation (CDDV) was established within the Belgian federal administration to serve the country's German-speaking Community, one of Belgium's three official language communities. Since 1976, the service has been responsible for translating Belgian legal texts and official documents — including laws, decrees, circulars and administrative documents — into German, so that German-speaking Belgians can consult these texts in their own language. The service is based in Malmedy, a municipality in the province of Liège within the German-speaking Community. It operates as a translation service of the Belgian Federal Public Service Home Affairs. Over the decades, the CDDV built up the Semamdy database, a trilingual (Dutch, German, French) terminology database containing approximately 40,000 words in the three national languages. It also feeds the TITREOFF database. The service translates codes and laws adopted by the Federal Parliament into German, translates federal norms such as decrees for other federal public services as an administrative service with accounting autonomy, and prepares unofficial coordinated versions of the codes translated into German. Its website makes available in a single database the German translations of Belgian codes, laws, decrees and circulars, and provides direct access to basic legal texts in areas including labour law, tax and financial law, civil and judicial law, commercial and economic law, public and administrative law, social security law and criminal law. The CDDV has celebrated its 50th anniversary, reflecting five decades of continuous institutional translation work for Belgium's German-speaking Community.
