Overview

Cenit Shopping Centre (Centro Comercial Cenit) is a community shopping gallery and market located at Avenida de Murcia 6 in Cartagena, Spain. It was inaugurated on 4 January 1983 and is recognised as the first shopping centre of its kind in the city. The centre is structured as a commercial gallery attached to a residential building, with an adjoining paved esplanade that serves as a car park and hosts a weekly street market of more than 200 stalls every Wednesday. The centre houses a mix of small, locally owned shops focused on everyday needs. Its commercial offering spans fashion and textiles, food, beauty, sports, and various other categories. Specific businesses mentioned by the centre include fruit and vegetable sellers, fishmongers, footwear and accessories shops, travel agencies, butchers and delicatessens, bakeries, and gift shops. This emphasis on proximity retail — the traditional, trusted local trade — is central to its identity. Cenit is managed by a board of shopkeepers and has had a series of presidents since its founding, including César L. Pastor Hurtado, Dolores Escolar Conesa, José Martínez Gómez, Alfonso Díaz García, Joaquín Martínez Quiñonero, Justo Pérez Fernández, Antonio Martínez Ruiz, José Bethencourt Martínez, and Joaquín Torralba Velázquez. In 1986 the position of manager was created. The centre has adapted to changing retail conditions, launching a website in 2012 to showcase its shops, offers, and contact details, and later offering an Android app. It regularly organises events such as lotteries and contests to engage customers. As a neighbourhood shopping centre, Cenit faces competition from large retail surfaces and from the diversification of commerce into smaller units across districts. Its management and local institutions have stressed the need to protect and promote proximity commerce spaces to preserve part of the city's commercial heritage. The centre remains active and continues to serve the Ensanche-Almarjal neighbourhood and the wider Cartagena area.

History

Cenit Shopping Centre opened on 4 January 1983 in Cartagena, Spain, becoming the city's first shopping centre. At its inauguration, more than 80% of the available retail units were already occupied. The centre was established as a commercial gallery attached to a residential building, with an adjoining paved esplanade that serves as a car park and hosts a weekly street market of over 200 stalls every Wednesday. The first president was César L. Pastor Hurtado, who was also one of the founders active during the first year. He was succeeded by Dolores Escolar Conesa and then, the following year, by José Martínez Gómez. In 1986, the position of manager was created, with Alfonso Díaz García serving as president at that time. Antonio Ros Francés was appointed to the manager role and was ratified by the new board. The following year, Joaquín Martínez Quiñonero was named president (1988). Subsequent presidents included Justo Pérez Fernández, Antonio Martínez Ruiz, Justo Pérez Fernández again, José Bethencourt Martínez, and Joaquín Torralba Velázquez. Over the decades, the centre has remained a reference for quality and selected products in Cartagena. In 2012, in the context of the economic crisis that began in 2008, and aiming to capture greater consumer attention, the centre launched a website to host information about its shops, including offers and contact details. For several years, it has also regularly organised events such as lotteries and contests. More recently, it has offered an Android application and welcomed new businesses such as Frutas y verduras Toñi. The centre's management has emphasised the challenges facing proximity commerce, which competes not only with large retail surfaces but also with their diversification into smaller units integrated into neighbourhoods, as well as with numerous competitors seeking profitability with low investment. Local institutions, including the Chamber of Commerce of Cartagena, have stressed the need to protect and promote these spaces of commerce to avoid losing part of the city's heritage. Cenit continues to operate as a community shopping destination in the Ensanche-Almarjal neighbourhood.
