Overview
Celler Vall-Llach is a winery located in Porrera, within the Qualified Designation of Origin (DOQ) Priorat in Catalonia, Spain. It was founded in 1997 by the Catalan singer-songwriter Lluís Llach and the notary Enric Costa. The winery operates from a building constructed in 1881, which was restored shortly after 2020 and is also catalogued as heritage. The estate focuses on controlled micro-production from specific plots and "trossos" (parcels), prioritising quality over quantity and deliberately capping production growth to maintain exhaustive, personalised control over every process. This approach, combined with the unique character of the Priorat terroir, yields wines the winery describes as fascinating and exclusive. The winery owns or leases a selection of old vineyards aged between 90 and 110 years, planted with Carignan (carinyena) and Grenache (garnatxa), which provide exclusive must for its selections. In the early 1990s, before the winery's official founding, a set of estates was acquired with complementary varieties, mainly Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, to supplement the traditional local varieties. The first harvest was in 1998, and the wine reached the market at the end of 2000. The main wine brands are Idus, Embruix and, above all, Vall Llach, which received a 94-point rating from Robert Parker. In 2009, the winery exported 65% of its production. Beyond winemaking, since 2008 Celler Vall Llach has convened the Certamen Terra i Cultura – Premi Miquel Martí i Pol, a music-literary award granted to the best original musical composition based on a poem in the Catalan language. On 10 January 2021, during the heavy snowfalls of Storm Filomena, the roof of the winery building collapsed under the weight of accumulated snow, bringing down a side wall and causing the building to cave in. The collapse affected production and stock of wines from 2018, 2019 and 2020 that had not yet been commercialised due to slowed exports to markets such as North America. The building was insured, as were the vats and machinery inside. The winery remains active, offering visits and tastings led by its team of professionals, winemakers and those responsible for the wines of Celler Vall Llach.
