Overview
Celebrity Solstice is a Solstice-class cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises, which is part of Royal Caribbean Group. It was designed as a major expansion of Celebrity's large-ship fleet and was built by Meyer Werft in Papenburg, Germany. The ship's keel was laid in March 2007, and it became the largest cruise ship constructed in Germany at the time. It was floated out on 10 August 2008, departed the shipyard on 28 September, and reached Fort Lauderdale on 3 November 2008. After preview voyages for travel professionals and invited guests, it was formally named at Port Everglades on 14 November 2008 by ocean scientist Professor Sharon L. Smith. Commercial service began on 23 November 2008. The vessel was notable within Celebrity's fleet because it was the company's first post-Panamax ship. Its design combined a large-scale cruise-ship layout with the line's emphasis on contemporary interiors, dining, service, and destination-oriented travel. The exterior profile was developed by yacht designer Martin Francis of Francis Design, while Wilson Butler Architects produced the overall masterplan and designed several central public areas. Other specialist firms worked on the main dining room, specialty restaurants and lounges, casino, boutiques, art gallery, and spa. A 12-deck-high atrium, glassblowing studio, multiple entertainment spaces, specialty restaurants, and the Lawn Club—a half-acre area of real grass on the upper deck—were among the features that distinguished the ship from more conventional resort-style cruise vessels. Celebrity Solstice has served a range of international cruise markets, including Alaska and destinations in the Asia-Pacific region. Its onboard proposition centers on premium cruise vacations rather than a separate consumer product range: accommodation, dining, entertainment, wellness, retail, shore excursions, and destination itineraries are integrated into one ship-based hospitality experience. Sustainability-related design features include photovoltaic panels, energy-efficient ventilation and air-conditioning systems, an optimized hull form, and underwater coatings intended to reduce energy consumption. The ship's 216 solar panels provide electricity for part of its lighting system. An 11-day dry-dock refurbishment from 22 October to 1 November 2016 added upgrades including an outdoor movie screen in the Patio area. A substantially broader modernization took place under Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Renewed program in early 2026. Celebrity Solstice was the first ship to enter dry dock under that fleet-wide initiative. The work at Seatrium's Tuas Boulevard Yard in Singapore lasted just over six weeks, and the ship returned to service on 2 March 2026. The refit added new venues, refreshed existing staterooms, introduced 54 cabins in four new categories, and increased the total to 1,479 cabins. The former real-grass Lawn Club was replaced by Sunset Park, an outdoor social venue using artificial turf. The Retreat suite area gained a redesigned lounge and new sundeck, while AquaClass accommodations received updated spa-oriented features. The refitted ship also includes venues and concepts such as Trattoria Rossa, Fine Cut Steakhouse, Murano, Sushi on Five, Boulevard Lounge, The Parlor, expanded Celebrity Shops, and refreshed spa and solarium facilities. Celebrity Solstice remains an active premium cruise ship and an important representative of Celebrity Cruises' Solstice generation. Its significance lies less in a standalone trademarked consumer product than in its role as the lead vessel of a ship class that helped establish Celebrity's large-scale, design-led cruise identity.
History
Celebrity Solstice was conceived as the lead vessel of Celebrity Cruises' Solstice class and represented a significant increase in scale for the brand. Meyer Werft built the ship at Papenburg, Germany, marking Celebrity's return to the shipyard after earlier work on vessels associated with its Century and Horizon generations. Construction began with keel laying in March 2007. During construction, the ship was described as the largest cruise ship built in Germany up to that time. The vessel was floated out on 10 August 2008 and left Meyer Werft on 28 September. It arrived at Fort Lauderdale on 3 November 2008, where it undertook preview voyages for travel agents and invited guests. Professor Sharon L. Smith, an ocean scientist, officially named the ship at Port Everglades on 14 November. Celebrity Solstice entered regular commercial operation on 23 November 2008. Its design introduced a number of features intended to give Celebrity Cruises a distinctive premium identity at large-ship scale. Martin Francis of Francis Design worked on the exterior profile, while Wilson Butler Architects developed the masterplan and several major entertainment and public areas. Specialist designers contributed to the dining room, lounges, bars, boutiques, casino, art gallery, and spa. The ship's signature features included a tall atrium, a glassblowing studio, and the Lawn Club, an outdoor upper-deck area surfaced with real grass. The ship also carried a revised version of Celebrity's visual identity, including the company's X motif on the forward funnel and glass elements. Celebrity Solstice subsequently operated international itineraries, including Alaska and Asia-Pacific deployments. Its onboard facilities were designed around an integrated premium cruise model, combining staterooms and suites with restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, shopping, wellness facilities, and shore-excursion access. Environmental systems included 216 photovoltaic panels, energy-efficient climate-control equipment, an optimized hull design, and underwater coatings intended to reduce resistance and energy use. The ship received an 11-day dry-dock upgrade in October and November 2016. Among the changes was an outdoor movie screen in the Patio area. A much larger update was undertaken in 2026 as part of Celebrity Cruises' Celebrity Renewed program. Celebrity Solstice entered Seatrium's Tuas Boulevard Yard in Singapore in January and remained there for slightly more than six weeks. It returned to service on 2 March 2026 and then operated a 12-night voyage to Hong Kong before its planned Alaska season. The 2026 modernization expanded the ship to 1,479 cabins through the addition of 54 rooms in four categories and refreshed all existing staterooms. The former Lawn Club was removed and converted into Sunset Park, an outdoor social space with artificial turf. The Retreat received a new sundeck with a hot tub and a redesigned private lounge. AquaClass rooms gained updated spa-inspired amenities. The refit also introduced or refreshed venues including Trattoria Rossa, Fine Cut Steakhouse, Murano, Sushi on Five, Boulevard Lounge, The Parlor, the Celebrity Shops, the Solarium, and the Persian Garden. The work aligned the ship's appearance more closely with newer Celebrity vessels, including a dark-blue hull treatment associated with the modern fleet design.

Passenger reported overboard near Eldred Rock in Alaska[1]
Other
On 17 May 2022, a 40-year-old passenger went overboard from Celebrity Solstice near Eldred Rock in the Lynn Canal while the ship was traveling from Juneau to Skagway. The U.S. Coast Guard, an assisting cutter, an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter, and the ship's lifeboats conducted a search for approximately nine hours. The operation was suspended because of the cold water and estimated survival time. Alaska State Troopers later identified the passenger and opened a death investigation; the body was not recovered.
