Overview

Cedarbarn is a farm shop, café and visitor attraction in the heart of North Yorkshire, about a mile from the market town of Pickering. It began in 1995 as a small pick-your-own strawberries business run by fourth-generation farmer Karl Avison and his wife Mandy, and grew into a permanent farm shop and café built in 2007. The site also includes a butchery counter added in 2009, a miniature railway opened in 2016, a play area, indoor and outdoor dining, pick-your-own fruit, and a dog walking field. The business is family-run, with daughter Chloe and other relatives involved, and has received numerous regional food and business awards.

History

Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café began as a small pick-your-own strawberries business in 1995, established by fourth-generation farmer Karl Avison and his wife Mandy on a family farm bought by Karl's great grandparents Jack and Elizabeth in 1919 and subsequently farmed by Karl's grandad Eddie and then dad Colin. By 2007, demand for PYO fruit had grown enough to replace the PYO caravan with a permanent building: the original Cedarbarn Farm Shop and Café, with a 40-seater café selling food and drink from other Yorkshire producers alongside home-grown fruit and vegetables and home-reared Aberdeen Angus beef. A bespoke butchery counter was added in 2009. In 2010, Cedarbarn was invited to supply asparagus for Her Majesty The Queen's visit to Scarborough, and in 2015 its gooseberries appeared on James Martin's Home Comforts BBC TV programme. In 2016, the play area was developed and the miniature railway opened. A shop/café extension followed in 2018. In 2019, Karl trained as a jockey for 12 months and took part in the Macmillan Ride of their Lives at York Races, with Cedarbarn raising £19k for Macmillan through various events. The business is run by Karl and Mandy along with General Manager Alison Riley, and remains a family affair with daughter Chloe playing a key role.
