Overview

CCI Ammunition is an American ammunition manufacturer producing a variety of calibers including handgun, rifle, and shotgun ammunition.

History

CCI Ammunition originated in the early 1950s, when Dick Speer and his partner Arvid Nelson established a cartridge and primer manufacturing business. Dick Speer was the brother of Vernon Speer, who had founded Speer Bullets. CCI's first shipment was connected to a defense contract for primers using chlorate FA-70. The company subsequently moved toward safer primer formulations and sporting-ammunition production. A central part of CCI's early commercial importance was its role in supplying primers to handloaders. Reliable primers were essential to hobby reloaders, who assembled ammunition from separately purchased cases, bullets, powder, and primers. CCI helped create a consistent commercial source for this market while building manufacturing expertise that could be applied to complete cartridges. The company later developed a major position in rimfire ammunition. In 1962, it introduced the .22 Long Rifle Mini-Mag, a high-velocity rimfire product that became an enduring part of the CCI range. In 1975, CCI engineers completed development of the Stinger, described as a hyper-velocity .22 Long Rifle load. The Stinger used a case approximately 0.702 inches long, compared with approximately 0.613 inches for standard .22 Long Rifle ammunition, while retaining the required overall cartridge dimensions. This design helped establish CCI's reputation for specialized high-velocity rimfire products. CCI expanded beyond rimfire cartridges and primers into centerfire handgun ammunition, specialty loads, and industrial ammunition. Its Blazer line, formally launched in 1981, became associated with economical handgun and training ammunition, particularly 9mm full-metal-jacket cartridges. The company also developed or marketed products connected with the CCI/Speer ammunition business, including Gold Dot-related ammunition, component bullets, and reloading products. The company's manufacturing base remained in Lewiston, Idaho. CCI acquired land next to the Lewiston Gun Club and later obtained additional acreage after the gun club moved. The plant continued to operate at that location into the 2020s. CCI's operations grew to include a broad workforce; in February 2015, it was reported as employing roughly 1,100 people. Corporate ownership changed as the ammunition industry consolidated. CCI became part of Alliant Techsystems and was subsequently included in Vista Outdoor following Vista Outdoor's separation from Alliant Techsystems. During its Vista Outdoor period, CCI continued developing rimfire, handgun, hunting, and reloading products. The business also pursued product extensions and marketing partnerships, including the MeatEater line created with hunting personality Steven Rinella and the MeatEater organization. That range includes Copper-22, Mini-Mag, and Maxi-Mag variants aimed at small-game and hunting users. In the early 2020s, CCI continued to update its rimfire range. The company introduced 14 new products in 2020 and launched Clean-22 Hyper Velocity ammunition in 2023. Clean-22 uses a polymer coating intended to reduce lead fouling in the barrel. In November 2024, CCI was sold by Vista Outdoor to Czechoslovak Group. The transaction made CCI part of an international industrial and defense group while preserving its identity as a Lewiston-based ammunition manufacturer. Today, CCI's historical strengths remain primers, rimfire ammunition, and specialized .22 Long Rifle products. Its broader catalog serves recreational and competitive shooters, hunters, reloaders, firearms retailers, and industrial customers. The brand's development reflects the transition from a small primer producer to a diversified ammunition business with recognized product families in both rimfire and centerfire markets.
