History
CBM Italia was founded in Milan in 2001 and is part of an international organization active since 1908. The history of CBM begins in 1908 with the founding of the first home for blind and disabled children in Turkey by Ernst Jakob Christoffel, born in Rheydt, Germany, in 1876. In 1919 Christoffel was expelled from Turkey; he later went to Iran, where he founded two homes in Tabriz and Isfahan in 1925 and 1928 respectively. During the Second World War he was arrested and had to leave Iran, returning only in 1951; he died on 23 April 1955. In 2009 CBM Italia was recognized as an NGO by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; in 2023 it acquired the status of Ente del Terzo Settore (ETS) and in 2024 it became a Fondazione.
