Overview
The Cavardirashütte (Romansh: Camona da Cavardiras) is a mountain hut owned and operated by the Winterthur Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It sits at 2,649 metres above sea level in the Swiss canton of Graubünden, just east of the Fuorcla da Cavardiras pass. To the west of the hut lie the Brunnifirn glacier and the Oberalpstock massif. The hut was built in 1928 and has been expanded several times, notably in 1974 and 1986, with further construction in the basement in 2006. It offers accommodation for 65 people and received a new kitchen in 2007. As a SAC hut, it serves mountaineers and hikers traversing the region, with access routes from Disentis/Mustér, Caischavedra, and the Maderanertal valley. The hut is a classic example of the SAC's network of alpine shelters, providing essential infrastructure for high-altitude travel in the Swiss Alps.
History
The Cavardirashütte was constructed in 1928 by the Winterthur Section of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC). It was built to provide shelter for mountaineers and hikers crossing the Fuorcla da Cavardiras and exploring the surrounding Oberalpstock massif and Brunnifirn glacier. The hut was expanded in 1974 and again in 1986 to increase capacity and improve facilities. In 2006, further construction work was carried out in the basement, and in 2007 a new kitchen was installed. The hut remains an active part of the SAC's network of alpine shelters, offering 65 beds and serving as a key base for high-altitude routes in the region.
