Overview
The Societat Catalana d'Estudis Dantescos (SCED) — in English, the Catalan Society on Dante Studies — is an academic association created in 2000 and linked to Catalan universities, in particular to the Institut d'Estudis Medievals of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Its principal mission is the research, promotion, development and teaching of studies concerning Dante Alighieri and his times, with the aim of becoming an important pole in the field of international research. The society also sets out to organise courses and activities for a broad public in order to disseminate Dante and his work within Catalan society. Its membership is deliberately diverse: on the one hand, researchers whose line of inquiry is Dante Alighieri (his work, the context in which he lived, the translations that have been made of it, and so on), and on the other, people simply interested in the life and work of the Florentine author. The SCED publishes its own journal, Dante e l'Arte, whose objective is to emphasise the centrality of Dante in creation. The society is also active in organising scholarly events: between 15 and 17 December 2021, at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Poblenou Campus), it held the international congress 'Traduccions i recepció de Dante en les llengües romàniques' (Translations and Reception of Dante in the Romance Languages), organised jointly with the Department of Translation and Language Sciences (UPF) and the Societat Catalana de Llengua i Literatura (IEC). The congress marked the seventh centenary of the death of Dante Alighieri by studying the reception and translations of his work in the Romance languages from the medieval period to the present day. The society's website is hosted by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
History
The Societat Catalana d'Estudis Dantescos (SCED) was created in 2000 as an association linked to Catalan universities, and in particular to the Institut d'Estudis Medievals of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. From its foundation, its stated purpose has been the research, promotion, development and didactics of studies relating to Dante Alighieri and his times, with the ambition of becoming an important pole in the field of international research. Alongside this scholarly mission, the society has also committed itself to organising courses and activities aimed at a broad public, so as to disseminate Dante and his work within Catalan society. This dual orientation is reflected in its membership, which brings together researchers specialising in Dante — his oeuvre, the historical context in which he lived, and the translations of his work — and members of the general public interested in the life and work of the Florentine poet. The society publishes its own journal, Dante e l'Arte, dedicated to emphasising Dante's centrality in artistic creation. In 2021, the SCED co-organised an international congress at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Poblenou Campus) from 15 to 17 December, titled 'Traduccions i recepció de Dante en les llengües romàniques' (Translations and Reception of Dante in the Romance Languages). The event, held jointly with the Department of Translation and Language Sciences (UPF) and the Societat Catalana de Llengua i Literatura (IEC), commemorated the seventh centenary of Dante's death by examining the reception and translation of his work across the Romance languages from the medieval period to the present. The society maintains an online presence hosted by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.
