Overview

The Catalan Society of Science Fiction and Fantasy (Societat Catalana de Ciència-ficció i Fantasia, SCCFF) is a non-profit association of fans and professionals dedicated to the science fiction and fantasy genres in the Catalan-speaking territories. Its stated mission is to normalize science fiction within the Catalan language sphere and to normalize Catalan within the science fiction sphere. The society was constituted in 1997, driven by members of the science fiction section of the Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC), and it was legally registered as an independent entity in July 2005. It publishes the magazine Catarsi, dedicated to promoting science fiction, horror and fantasy in Catalan, featuring both original writing and translations into Catalan. Since 2012, following the integration of the Ter-Cat gatherings, the SCCFF has organized the Ictineu Awards for fantasy works written or translated into Catalan, currently in six categories. The society also maintains a website, organizes events and maintains permanent archives of documentation, projects and achievements. Its president, as of the official website, is Eloi Puig.

History

The Catalan Society of Science Fiction and Fantasy (SCCFF) traces its origins to the mid-1990s, when members of La Penya del Coet (including Antoni Munné-Jordà and Jordi Solé i Camardons) and the Col·lectiu Freaks (including Sebastià Roig, Salvador Macip, Amadeu Ros and Emili Gil) collaborated on the idea of creating a Catalan science fiction and fantasy association. The society was constituted in 1997, initially as a section of the Associació d'Escriptors en Llengua Catalana (AELC), and it was legally registered as an independent entity in July 2005. From 1997 to 2015, the society published a free bulletin called SC2F2 for its members. In November 2017, it organized CatCon 2017 in Vilanova i la Geltrú to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the "I encontre de ciència-ficció en llengua catalana", the founding event of the SCCFF. In 2012, with the integration of the Ter-Cat gatherings, the SCCFF began organizing the Ictineu Awards for fantasy works written or translated into Catalan. The society continues to publish the magazine Catarsi and to maintain a website with news, agendas and archives.
