Overview

The Casino de Cabourg is a historic seaside casino located in Cabourg, in the Calvados department of Normandy, France. It was founded in the mid-19th century when Henri-Durand Morimbeau, a lawyer, and Achille Colin, a secretary, decided to create a casino in the emerging seaside resort. Construction of the first wooden casino began on 9 May 1854. Because the original building stood too close to the seawall, a new casino was built in 1867 by architect Victor Isouard, closer to the sea and a few steps from the Grand Hôtel de la Plage, which had been built in 1862. A large ballroom was added in 1880 to enlarge the casino. The establishment was modernized in 1891 by Charles Bertrand with the arrival of electricity. In 1909, Bertrand decided to build a new casino together with the adjoining grand hotel, designed by architects Lucien Viraut and Émile Mauclerc. The municipality of Cabourg bought the casino in 1956. Since 1997 it has been managed by the Groupe Partouche, a major French casino operator. In 2006, the municipal council renewed the management of the establishment to Groupe Partouche for the following fifteen years. Between 2006 and 2007, the casino underwent expansion works. It offers traditional gaming rooms and a panoramic restaurant called "Kaz". In 2022, the delegation was renewed again for 12 years, with plans for a brand-new casino at the entrance to the town by around 2026. Once the new gaming room opens, the old casino will be dedicated to theatre and conferences. The building is protected as a monument historique. By an order of 6 October 1993, the facades and roofs, the vestibule of the south-east rotunda with all its decoration, and the performance hall with all its decoration, including the incorporated electrical installation, were listed as monuments historiques. The casino remains an active gaming and entertainment venue and a landmark of the Côte Fleurie seaside resort.
