Overview
The Casa de Zamora en Madrid is a non-profit organization that brings together citizens originating from the province of Zamora, as well as their descendants, who live in the Community of Madrid. It was created in 1929 as a Centro Zamorano-Leonés and formally constituted on 24 January 1930, with Geminiano Carrascal as its first president. The entity was closed during the Spanish Civil War and resumed activities in 1940 at Calle Atocha 42. In 1959, following the Ribadelago disaster caused by a dam break in the Sanabria area of Zamora, the Hogar Sanabrés dissolved and integrated into the Casa de Zamora. In the late 1960s the organization acquired its current headquarters on Calle de las Tres Cruces in Madrid, and on 23 October 1970 it was declared of public utility. The Casa has maintained since its beginnings the mission of becoming a center for representing Zamoran interests in Madrid. Its annual activities include the Pregón de la Semana Santa de Zamora en Madrid, held uninterruptedly since 1951, which was initiated by journalist and board member Juan Carlos Villacorta and first delivered by the Sanabrian journalist and poet Bartolomé Mostaza under the presidency of Agustín del Río Cisneros. The event was broadcast nationally by Radio Nacional de España and moved to the Teatro Lara the following year. The Casa's Pregón predates the one held in Zamora itself, which took its current form in 1955. The organization also hosts cultural groups: the Coral Peña Tajada, a choir started informally in the late 1980s by members and first directed by Justo Bailón Prieto, now directed by Ángel Cabello; the Grupo de Teatro Ramos Carrión, directed by Concha Marcos, one of the best-known theater groups among regional houses in the Community of Madrid, with recent works including "¿Quién teme a Virginia Woolf?", "Largo viaje hacia la noche" and "Arte"; the Grupo de Danzas Arribes del Duero, directed by Mari Mar Barrón, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010; and the Grupo de Gaitas Urzes, which recorded its first album "de urzes y madroños" in 2012, receiving attention on radio programs such as Tarataña (Radio 3), Músicas de Tradición Oral (Radio Clásica) and Entrelares (Radio Círculo), as well as in written press. In July 1957 the Casa began publishing the Boletín Informativo, a quarterly communication medium covering its activities; during the second half of the 20th century the journalist Eloy de Prada was a major promoter of the Boletín. In 2009 the first issue of Zamoranos en Madrid appeared, a new bulletin with a renewed image and design, promoted by president Juan Antonio Barrio. In 2013 it began digital-only publication. The budget is funded mainly by member fees and by grants from, among others, the Diputación Provincial de Zamora, the Ayuntamiento de Zamora, the Junta de Castilla y León, the Comunidad de Madrid, the Ayuntamiento de Madrid and the Fundación Conchita Regojo de Fermoselle. The current board was elected by acclamation at an Extraordinary General Assembly on 9 February 2013, and Mari Luz Uña, a native of Bercianos de Vidriales, serves as president.
History
The Casa de Zamora en Madrid was created in 1929 as a Centro Zamorano-Leonés and was formally constituted on 24 January 1930, with Geminiano Carrascal as its first president. During the Spanish Civil War the entity was closed, and it resumed activities in 1940 at number 42 of Calle Atocha. In 1959, following the Ribadelago catastrophe caused by a dam break in the Sanabria area of Zamora, the Hogar Sanabrés dissolved and integrated into the Casa de Zamora. In the late 1960s the entity acquired the premises that remain its social headquarters today, on Calle de las Tres Cruces in Madrid. On 23 October 1970 it was declared of public utility. The presidents of La Casa de Zamora have been: Geminiano Carrascal Martín (1930–1939); Enrique Romero Escudero; Gerardo García Salvatierra (1947–1949); Carlos Parrilla Fernández (1949–1952); Agustín del Río Cisneros (1952–1961); Antonio Fernández Prieto (1961–1981); Daniel Jambrina Jambrina (1981–1989); Andrés Fernández Granado (1989–1995); Carlos Prieto (1995–1996); Manuel Amador González (1996–2005); José Luis Martín (2005–2009); Juan Antonio Barrio (2009–2013); and Mari Luz Uña (2013–present). Since its beginnings the Casa has maintained the mission of becoming a center for representing Zamoran interests in Madrid. Perhaps its most representative annual event is the Pregón de la Semana Santa de Zamora en Madrid, held uninterruptedly since 1951. Promoted by journalist and board member Juan Carlos Villacorta, that year the pregón was delivered by the Sanabrian journalist and poet Bartolomé Mostaza under the presidency of Agustín del Río Cisneros. Given the success of that year, the Pregón, offered for the whole country by Radio Nacional de España, moved the following year to the Teatro Lara. As a curiosity, the Casa de Zamora's Pregón predates the one held in Zamora itself, since the one in Zamora took its current form in 1955. In the late 1980s, informally, a group of members proposed to president Primitivo Pérez de la Prieta the idea of creating a choir made up of members to promote singing in the entity. With the help of Justo Bailón Prieto, its first director, the Coral Peña Tajada was launched and today is directed by Ángel Cabello. The Grupo de Teatro Ramos Carrión, directed by Concha Marcos, is one of the best-known theater groups among regional houses in the Community of Madrid; among its recent works are "¿Quién teme a Virginia Woolf?", "Largo viaje hacia la noche" and "Arte". The Grupo de Danzas Arribes del Duero, directed by Mari Mar Barrón, celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2010 with a performance that served as a reunion for all who had ever belonged to the group; wherever they go they gather praise for their Carbajales costumes and their dancing. The Grupo de Gaitas Urzes is a revived group that is a colorful representative in any of its performances; little by little, through numerous performances, it is getting people to stop asking whether they are Galician or Asturian bagpipers and is becoming known as the bagpipers of Zamora. In 2012 they recorded their first album, "de urzes y madroños", which achieved great success within the traditional folk scene. It has been covered on numerous occasions by radio programs such as Tarataña (Radio 3), Músicas de Tradición Oral (Radio Clásica) and Entrelares (Radio Círculo), as well as in written press (La Opinión de Zamora, España exterior, Zamora Digital...). In July 1957 it began publishing the Boletín Informativo, a quarterly communication medium that covered the various activities held at La Casa. During the second half of the 20th century the great promoter of the Boletín was the Zamoran journalist Eloy de Prada. In 2009 the first issue of Zamoranos en Madrid appeared, the entity's new communication bulletin with a totally renewed image and design, promoted by president Juan Antonio Barrio. In 2013, adapting to new times and technologies, it began digital-only publication. The budget is funded mainly by the fees of its members, as well as by grants from, among others, the Diputación Provincial de Zamora, the Ayuntamiento de Zamora, the Junta de Castilla y León, the Comunidad de Madrid and the Ayuntamiento de Madrid and the Fundación Conchita Regojo de Fermoselle. The board was elected by acclamation at the Extraordinary General Assembly held on 9 February 2013.
