Cartamundi

Cartamundi is a Belgian games and printing group headquartered in Turnhout, Belgium. The company manufactures, produces, and sells playing cards, board games, card games, collectible card games, game packaging, and associated printed products through a network of manufacturing plants and sales subsidiaries. Its name is derived from Latin and is commonly explained as meaning “cards for the world,” reflecting the company’s international orientation. The business was established in 1970 as a joint venture between three Belgian printing and playing-card companies: Biermans, Brepols, and Van Genechten. Those predecessor businesses had much older histories, reaching back to the eighteenth century. Cartamundi initially built on Belgium’s established playing-card manufacturing tradition and gradually expanded from a regional production business into an international supplier for both consumer brands and specialist game publishers. A major part of Cartamundi’s role in the market is business-to-business manufacturing. Sales operations were established in markets including France, the United States, the Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Singapore, Spain, Austria, Italy, and Turkey. The company also acquired or invested in established playing-card and game-printing businesses in Switzerland, Germany, the United Kingdom, Poland, Brazil, the United States, India, and Spain. These transactions expanded Cartamundi’s manufacturing footprint, regional brands, and access to local customers. In 2015, Cartamundi acquired Hasbro’s board-game manufacturing facilities in Waterford, Ireland, and East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. The transactions strengthened its position as a contract manufacturer of board games and broadened its production capabilities beyond traditional playing cards. The former Hasbro facility in Ireland was subsequently closed in August 2023, with 235 jobs reported as lost. Cartamundi was created in 1970 as a joint venture between Biermans, Brepols, and Van Genechten, three Belgian companies connected to a long tradition of printing and playing-card production. The historical roots of the constituent businesses extend back to 1765, giving the new group a substantial industrial and craft heritage from its beginning. The name Cartamundi, derived from Latin, expressed an ambition to serve card markets internationally rather than remain limited to Belgium. Cartamundi acquired AGMüller in Switzerland in 1999; Altenburger und Stralsunder Spielkarten in Germany in 2000; Spielkartenfabrik Altenburg in Germany in 2002; Games & Print Services in the United Kingdom in 2003; Dertor in Poland and Copag in Brazil in 2005; Yaquinto Printing Company in the United States in 2007; a 50 percent interest in Parksons Games & Sports in India in 2010; Marigó in Spain in 2011; France Cartes in 2014; and Naipes Heraclio Fournier in Spain and the United States Playing Card Company in 2019. These transactions broadened Cartamundi’s geographic reach and added well-known regional production capabilities and card brands to the group. The company also became an important production partner for collectible card games. In the early and mid-1990s, its Belgian factory printed early editions of Magic: The Gathering for Wizards of the Coast. It also produced collectible card game products for Decipher, including games based on Star Trek and Star Wars. Cartamundi has continued to manufacture non-English-language editions of Magic, while English-language sets have been printed in Dallas, Texas. This work illustrates the shift in the group’s business from conventional playing cards toward technically demanding collectible and licensed game products. In 2015, Cartamundi acquired Hasbro’s board-game manufacturing sites in Waterford, Ireland, and East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. Its business model combines manufacturing scale with specialized production for publishers, entertainment companies, retailers, and other brand owners. Alongside its production role, the group maintains a portfolio of playing-card and game businesses acquired across multiple countries. Cartamundi’s defining historical development has therefore been the transformation of a Belgian card-making joint venture into a worldwide tabletop-games manufacturing and services group.
