Overview

Cartagena Histórica is a Spanish journal of local history dedicated to the city of Cartagena and its surrounding comarca in the Region of Murcia. It was launched in October 2002 by the Grupo Editorial Áglaya, a publishing house founded in 2000 and directed by Ángel Márquez Delgado until his death in 2012. The journal took over from earlier, discontinued initiatives by the Archivo Municipal de Cartagena — including a competition for historical publications — that had sought to bring local historical research to light. The publication was conceived as a quarterly, with issues planned for September, December, March and June, and it was accompanied by a series of supplementary monographic notebooks (cuadernos monográficos) announced as complementary publications. The first issue ran to 68 pages and was priced at 4.50 euros; the price remained unchanged until September 2008, when it rose to 6.00 euros. In June 2008 the journal's frequency was increased from quarterly to bimonthly, and the monographic notebook series was discontinued. The first stage produced 39 issues of the journal, published between October 2002 and January 2013, and 36 monographic notebooks, published between October 2002 and June 2008. Within three years of its founding the journal had won critical recognition as a reference point for Spanish publications of its kind. Its success encouraged the publisher to export the formula, leading to the creation of Madrid Histórico in 2006 and Murcia Histórica in 2008, and even to the promotion of a cultural meeting devoted to debate on the Second Republic. The journal's reputation rested on a combination of scholarly rigour and an accessible, non-academic tone, as well as on the willingness of local historians to collaborate from the outset. The journal is registered under ISSN 1696-9901, while its supplementary monographic notebooks carry ISSN 1696-991X. Issue 38 appeared in January 2011, and the final issue, number 39, was published in 2013, after the death of the founder; it ran to 80 pages, cost 6.00 euros and carried the words "Nueva Era" on its cover alongside the issue number. It opened with an article by Luis Miguel Pérez Adán and Francisco José Franco Fernández dedicated to the memory of Ángel Márquez Delgado, and announced the intention to give the journal "a new air" while previewing forthcoming articles. On 20 April 2017 the Archivo Municipal de Cartagena announced the digitisation of all issues of the journal's first stage and all the monographic notebooks, which have since been made available on its website for free consultation and download. The same announcement launched a second stage of the journal, this time in digital and free format, edited by the Archivo Municipal de Cartagena with design and layout by the CPD of the Ayuntamiento de Cartagena. The editorial board for this new stage comprises Cayetano Tornel Cobacho, Antonio Pedreño Vidal, Luis Miguel Pérez Adán, Francisco José Franco Fernández, José Sánchez Conesa and Juan Ignacio Ferrández García, together with Eva Márquez Zayas of Editorial Áglaya.

History

Cartagena Histórica emerged from a context of discontinued local-history publishing in Cartagena. Earlier projects run by the Archivo Municipal de Cartagena, including a competition for historical publications, had sought to bring historical research on the city to public attention but had come to an end. The new journal was promoted by Ángel Márquez Delgado, who had directed the Grupo Editorial Áglaya since its foundation in 2000 and who would lead the editorial until his death in 2012. The publication began in October 2002. It was conceived as a quarterly, with issues planned for September, December, March and June, as announced in the final pages of the first issue. The first issue ran to 68 pages and was priced at 4.50 euros. Alongside the journal, the publisher launched a series of supplementary monographic notebooks (cuadernos monográficos), announced in the first issue as complementary publications appearing monthly except in the months when the journal itself was published and except July and August. The first notebook ran to 23 pages and cost 2.50 euros. Within three years of its birth the journal had won the support of critics, who considered it a reference for publications of its category in Spain. Its success encouraged the publishing house to export the formula: Madrid Histórico was born in 2006 and Murcia Histórica in 2008. The publisher also promoted a cultural meeting whose theme of debate was the Second Republic. The journal's notoriety rested chiefly on its rigour combined with a relaxed language far removed from excessive academicism, and on the good reception it received among the city's historians, who chose to collaborate in the project from the beginning. In June 2008 the journal's frequency changed from quarterly to bimonthly, and the monographic notebook series was discontinued. The price of the journal, unchanged since launch, rose from 4.50 to 6.00 euros in September 2008. The first stage of the publication ultimately comprised 39 issues of the journal, published between October 2002 and January 2013, and 36 monographic notebooks, published between October 2002 and June 2008. Issue 38 appeared in January 2011; the final and definitive issue 39 was published two years later, in 2013, after the death of the founder. That last issue ran to 80 pages, cost 6.00 euros and carried the words "Nueva Era" on its cover next to the issue number. It opened with an article signed by Luis Miguel Pérez Adán and Francisco José Franco Fernández and dedicated to the memory of Ángel Márquez Delgado, founder of the journal. In it the intention to "give the journal a new air" was announced, and some articles planned for subsequent issues were previewed, including pieces on a day in the mine at La Unión, the Second Republic in the Cartagena countryside, the participation of ecclesial movements in the Spanish democratic transition in Cartagena (1968–1978), and seven rescued Cartagena artists. On 20 April 2017 the Archivo Municipal de Cartagena announced the digitisation of all the issues of the journal's first stage as well as all the monographic notebooks. Since then they have been included on its website for free consultation and download. The same announcement opened a second stage of the journal, this time in digital and free format. The edition is handled by the Archivo Municipal de Cartagena, while design and layout are the work of the CPD of the Ayuntamiento de Cartagena. The editorial board for this new stage consists of Cayetano Tornel Cobacho and Antonio Pedreño Vidal of the Archivo Municipal de Cartagena; Luis Miguel Pérez Adán, Francisco José Franco Fernández, José Sánchez Conesa and Juan Ignacio Ferrández García, all Cronistas Oficiales de Cartagena; and Eva Márquez Zayas of Editorial Áglaya.
