Overview
The Carschinahütte is a mountain hut of the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), Section Rätia, situated at 2,236 metres above sea level at the southern foot of the Sulzfluh in the Rätikon range, above the village of St. Antönien in the Swiss canton of Graubünden. It is a classic alpine refuge: a staffed summer hut with 62 sleeping places in nine rooms, soft duvets, a hut telephone, and a kitchen serving guests from mid-June to mid-October. The hut sits on the Prättigauer Höhenweg (route no. 72) from Klosters to Seewis and on the cross-border Via Alpina, making it a staging post for multi-day hut-to-hut tours around the Rätikon. Its surroundings are a playground for hikers, families, climbers, bikers and connoisseurs, with numerous climbing routes on the Drusenfluh, Sulzfluh and Scheienfluh, bouldering, and since July 2005 the first official via ferrata of eastern Switzerland in the south face of the Sulzfluh (difficulty D). The hut is reached from the PostBus stop St. Antönien Platz in about 2¾ hours via Alp Bärgli and the Carschinasee to the Carschinafurgga; in winter it is reachable from St. Antönien via Partnun and Brunnenegg in 2½ hours, or from Partnun in 1¾ hours. The building has a notable architectural pedigree: the 1968 new building was designed by Jakob Eschenmoser, regarded as the most important architect of SAC huts in the 20th century. It was first converted in 1985 and extended in 1993. In summer 2025 the hut underwent comprehensive renovation and was closed for the whole season; since the rebuild it no longer has a winter room, so overnight stays outside the staffed period are no longer possible. The freshly renovated hut reopened for guests on 4 June 2026, with the via ferratas Partnunblick I and II and the Sulzfluh via ferrata opening from 2 June 2026. The hut is run by hut warden Sonja Lütolf, who took over with Kim Sieber in November 2019; after Kim Sieber ended her service in December 2023, Nicola Jeggli became co-hut warden from 1 January 2024. The Carschinahütte is a small but well-loved piece of Swiss alpine infrastructure, combining hospitality, mountaineering access and architectural heritage under the umbrella of the Swiss Alpine Club.
History
The Carschinahütte takes its name from the Alm Carschina, an alpine pasture whose name derives from cassina, meaning hut, and was formerly also written Garschina. The hut belongs to the Section Rätia of the Swiss Alpine Club and stands at 2,236 metres above sea level at the southern foot of the Sulzfluh in the Rätikon range, above St. Antönien in the canton of Graubünden, with views into the St. Antöniertal. The present building dates from 1968, when a new hut was constructed to a design by Jakob Eschenmoser, considered the most important architect of SAC huts in the 20th century. It was first converted in 1985 and extended in 1993. Over the decades the hut became a fixture on the Prättigauer Höhenweg (marked route no. 72) from Klosters to Seewis and on the cross-border Via Alpina, as well as a base for climbing on the Drusenfluh, Sulzfluh and Scheienfluh. In July 2005 the first official via ferrata of eastern Switzerland opened in the south face of the Sulzfluh at difficulty D. In November 2019 Sonja Lütolf and Kim Sieber took over as hut wardens; Kim Sieber ended her service in December 2023, and Nicola Jeggli became co-hut warden from 1 January 2024. In summer 2025 the hut underwent comprehensive renovation and remained closed for the entire season. As a result of the rebuild, the hut no longer has a winter room, so overnight stays outside the staffed period are no longer possible. The freshly renovated hut reopened to guests on 4 June 2026, with the Partnunblick I and II via ferratas and the Sulzfluh via ferrata open from 2 June 2026. The hut offers 62 sleeping places in nine rooms and is staffed from mid-June to mid-October.
