Overview
Carpenter Co. is a manufacturer of polyurethane foams, serving a diversified global marketplace with polyurethane chemical solutions, polyester fibers, and insulation materials through a network of more than 60 production locations. The company was founded in 1950 by E. Rhodes Carpenter as a latex foam distributor and has grown to become the world's largest vertically integrated manufacturer of flexible polyurethane foam.
History
Carpenter Co. got its start as a latex foam distributor in 1950 when E. Rhodes Carpenter decided to start his own business. By 1956, the company was manufacturing its own flexible urethane foam. In the late 1960s, it expanded west, opening plants in Temple, Texas, and Russellville, Kentucky. In 1972, Carpenter established Choate Chemical Company in Pasadena, Texas, as a source of raw materials. The following year, the Roger W. Powell Plant began manufacturing polyether polyols. In the late '70s and early '80s, production facilities were opened in several locations, and in 1984, corporate headquarters were established on Monument Avenue in Richmond.
