Overview

Carnets Nord was an independent French publishing house founded in 2007 and backed by Éditions Montparnasse, a DVD publisher. Based in the 14th arrondissement of Paris, it published roughly a dozen new titles per year and built a catalogue of nearly fifty titles. Its list was organised around two main axes: French and foreign literature, and engaged documents and essays on current affairs. Among its authors were Sœur Emmanuelle (Mille et un bonheurs, 2007) and René Girard (Achever Clausewitz, 2007). It was also the first publisher of Mélissa Da Costa, releasing her novel Tout le bleu du ciel in February 2019; she went on to become, in 2022, the third best-selling novelist in France. The house was distributed by Média Participations. Despite its literary and commercial successes, the SARL ran into economic difficulties and was placed in judicial liquidation in October 2019. Its catalogue remains a notable example of a small independent French publisher that launched a major commercial author.

History

Carnets Nord was founded in 2007 as an independent French publishing house, backed by Éditions Montparnasse, a DVD publisher. It was based in the 14th arrondissement of Paris and published about a dozen new titles each year, building a catalogue of nearly fifty titles. Its editorial programme was divided between French and foreign literature and engaged documents and essays on current affairs. In its early years the house published notable authors including Sœur Emmanuelle (Mille et un bonheurs, 2007) and René Girard (Achever Clausewitz, 2007). Its literary list included French authors such as Richard Morgiève, Philippe Nicholson, Marie Faucher and Catherine Leroux, and foreign authors such as Tomas Gonzalez and Heinrich Steinfest. Its essays and documents list covered human sciences with authors including René Girard, Jean-Pierre Dupuy, Frédéric Gros, Jean-Michel Oughourlian, Jean-Marie Pelt and Stéphane Hessel, and current-affairs documents by Haydée Sabéran, Walden Bello, Gaël Giraud and Cécile Renouard, and Marie de Hennezel, as well as narratives by Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli, François Hauter and Jacky Durand. The publisher received literary prizes: the Prix Saint-Simon 2011 for Mes histoires parallèles by Marc Ferro (interviews with Isabelle Veyrat-Masson, 2011), and the Prix lycéen du Livre d'économie et de sciences sociales 2012 for Être arabe aujourd'hui by Akram Belkaïd (2011). In February 2019 Carnets Nord published Tout le bleu du ciel by Mélissa Da Costa, her first novel; she later became, in 2022, the third best-selling novelist in France. The house was distributed by Média Participations. However, the SARL faced economic difficulties and was placed in judicial liquidation in October 2019, ending its activity.
