Overview
Éditions du Carmel (Carmel Editions) is a French publishing house founded on 1 January 1949 by the Discalced Carmelite Order to continue the diffusion of the review Carmel (published since 1911) and the small review Scapulaire (founded in 1953), and to publish works of spirituality. As publisher and bookseller, it initially served Carmelite friars, nuns and secular members of the Order with a selection of spirituality and liturgy books. Its broader aim was to gradually spread Carmelite spirituality to all milieus and throughout the world. Readers diversified rapidly and interest in its publications grew. The company has been based in Toulouse since 2000, at 33 Avenue Jean-Rieux, in the crypt of the church of the Carmelite convent. It is owned by the Carmelite Province of Avignon-Aquitaine. The publishing house produces about twenty books per year and sells around 20,000 volumes annually in France and abroad. Its catalogue includes a dozen collections and two spirituality reviews: Carmel and Vives Flammes. Although a small structure, it is recognized for the quality of its publications. Éditions du Carmel is associated with the Librairie Siloë Carmel in Toulouse, which sells its titles and offers ebooks. The publisher's output covers Carmelite spirituality, Christian life, history of the Church, biographies of saints, and theological works. Notable authors include Blessed Marie-Eugène de l'Enfant-Jésus, whose book Je veux voir Dieu remains a flagship title.
History
The Éditions du Carmel were founded on 1 January 1949 by the Discalced Carmelite Order to continue the diffusion of the review Carmel, which had been published since 1911, and the small review Scapulaire, founded in 1953, as well as to publish works of spirituality. As publisher and bookseller, they initially offered Carmelite friars, nuns and secular members of the Order a selection of spirituality and liturgy books. The broader goal was to gradually spread Carmelite spirituality to all milieus and throughout the world. Readers diversified rapidly and interest in the publications grew. The creation of a commercial company became necessary. Directors succeeded one another from 1947, first as director of the Revue Carmel, then as head of the Éditions. Four Carmelites served between 1947 and 1955. In October 1955, Blessed Father Marie-Eugène de l'Enfant-Jésus (1894-1967) was elected prior of Petit-Castelet (commune of Tarascon, Bouches-du-Rhône), director of the Revue Carmel and of the Éditions du Carmel. He held this charge until his death in 1967. During these years, he oversaw the publication and reissues of Je veux voir Dieu (1956, 1957, 1964, etc.). The last revised and corrected edition, published in 2017, was reprinted in 2022. In 1962, the Éditions became the Société Anonyme des Éditions du Carmel with Father Marie-Eugène de l'Enfant-Jésus as administrator. After his death, the Éditions du Carmel remained at Petit-Castelet for two years, then in January 1969 moved to the convent of La Plesse, near Angers (Maine-et-Loire). They stayed there until 1975, then settled in Venasque (Vaucluse) on 17 July 1975. In 1976, a new company (still current) was created as a société par actions simplifiée (SAS). Since 2000, the Société des Éditions du Carmel, owned by the Carmelite Province of Avignon-Aquitaine, has been installed in Toulouse at 33 Avenue Jean-Rieux in the crypt of the church of the Carmelite convent. Today, the six people working there share book production (layout, proofreading, corrections), website management, shipping, bookstore reception, and accounting. Each year the Éditions publish about twenty works and sell around 20,000 volumes in France and abroad. Although a small structure, the Éditions du Carmel are dynamic and recognized for the quality of their publications.
